Thesuffix–ol is used inorganic chemistry principally to form names oforganic compounds containing thehydroxyl (–OH) group, mainlyalcohols. The suffix was extracted from the wordalcohol.
The suffix also appears in sometrivial names with reference tooils (from Latinoleum, oil). Examples of thissense of the suffix includephenol,eugenol,urushiol, andmenthol.
