It is used inpre-1983 romanization of theUyghur language, transliteratingژ[ʒ], a pre-consonantal allophone ofج/dʒ/ (seeQona Yëziq), but occurring independently in a few words of Russian, Persian or Western origin (such asⱬurnal fromjournal). It corresponds to the digraphzh in the currentULY standard.

Also, Z with descender was used in Latin orthographies of theAbaza language,Adyghe language,Avar language,Dargwa language,Kabardian language,Lak language,Komi language,Laz language,Lezgian language,Nanai language,Selkup language,Tabasaran language, andChechen language. It represented avoiced alveolo-palatal sibilant [ʑ]. It is also used in the formerLatin alphabet for theDungan language[citation needed] to represent thevoiceless retroflex affricate[tʂ] or thevoiceless alveolo-palatal affricate[tɕ].
