Er (Р р; italics:Р р orР р; italics:Р р) is a letter of theCyrillic script.

It commonly represents thealveolar trill/r/, like the "rolled" sound in the Scottish pronunciation of⟨r⟩ in "curd".

History

The Cyrillic letter Er was derived from theGreek letter Rho (Ρ ρ). It has no connection to theLatin letter P (P p), which evolved from theGreek letter Pi (Π π), despite both having the same form.

The name of Er in theEarly Cyrillic alphabet wasрьци (rĭci), meaning "speak".[1]

In theCyrillic numeral system, er had a value of 100.

Form

The Cyrillic letter Er (Р р)looks similar to the Greek letter Rho (Ρ ρ), and the same as theLatin letter P (P p;П in Cyrillic).
