5-Androstenedione, also known asandrost-5-ene-3,17-dione, is aprohormone oftestosterone. TheWorld Anti-Doping Agency prohibits its use inathletes. In theUnited States, it is acontrolled substance.
5-Androstenedione is structurally similar to4-androstenedione, with the exception of the position of a carbon-carbondouble bond.
4-Androstenedione isnaturally produced in the body by theadrenal glands andgonads. In addition totestosterone, it is also aprecursor ofestrone andestradiol.[1][2]
5-Androstenedione is on theWorld Anti-Doping Agency's list of prohibited substances,[3] and is therefore banned from use in most major sports.
