Ștefan Târnovanu (born 9 May 2000) is a Romanian professionalfootballer who plays as agoalkeeper forLiga I clubFCSB and theRomania national team.
Târnovanu made his senior debut on 31 March 2018, aged 17, starting forȘtiința Miroslava in a 0–1 loss toHermannstadt while on loan in thesecond league. On 30 November that year, he appeared for the first time in theLiga I for his boyhood clubPolitehnica Iași in a 1–1 home draw toSepsi OSK.[1]
Târnovanu was then again sent out on loan in the Liga II, moving toSportul Snagov for the second half of the2018–19 season.
On 29 September 2019, it was announced that Târnovanu agreed a deal in advance to joinFCSB the following summer. Politehnica Iași received €200,000 and also retained 15% interest on the capital gain of a possible future transfer.[2][3] Târnovanu made his debut for theRoș-albaștrii on 19 May 2021, playing the full 90 minutes in a 0–1 league loss toUniversitatea Craiova.[4]
On 20 December, he kept aclean sheet in a draw against Sepsi OSK, being named one of the best players of the game by theGazeta Sporturilor daily.[5] Following some unconvincing performances of regular starterAndrei Vlad, Târnovanu became the first-choice goalkeeper at the club in March 2022.[6]
In the2023–24 season, Târnovanu aided FCSB in winning the national championship[7] by making 39 appearances and having the most clean sheets (15).
In June 2021, Târnovanu was selected by managerMirel Rădoi inRomania's squad for the postponed2020 Summer Olympics, but did not feature in any match.[8]
Târnovanu was called up to thesenior team for the first time by coachEdward Iordănescu on 24 May 2022, for the four openinggroup games withMontenegro,Bosnia and Herzegovina, andFinland in theUEFA Nations League.[9] He made his debut on 20 November that year, in a 5–0 awayfriendly win againstMoldova.
On 7 June 2024, Târnovanu was named in Romania's squad for theEuro 2024,[10] but did not play in any game.
In September 2018, media outlets reported that Târnovanu was temporarily removed from theRomania national under-19 team after shopping online with his roommate'sbank card. The goalkeeper stated that "things were misunderstood" and he andAndrei Cristea-David are friends.[11]
