Worimi is a small family of two to five mostly extinctAustralian Aboriginal languages ofNew South Wales.

  • Awabakal, spoken aroundLake Macquarie in New South Wales. Awabakal was studied by ReverendLancelot Threlkeld from 1825 until his death in 1859, assisted byBiraban, the tribal leader, and parts of theBible were translated into the language. For example, theGospel of Mark begins: "Kurrikuri ta unni Evanelia Jesu úmba Krist koba, Yenal ta noa Eloi úmba."[1] The language is currently in early stages of revival.
  • Gadjang (Worimi), previously extinct,[2] in the early stages of revitalisation,[3] spoken by theWorimi people, from the easternPort Stephens andGreat Lakes regions of coastal New South Wales.

The languages are close enough to be accepted as related in the conservative classification ofDixon.[4] Bowern (2011) considers Gadjang, Worimi, andBirrpayi to be separate languages.[citation needed]
