Verkeerder Kill Falls is the highestwaterfall inSam's Point Preserve in theShawangunk Mountains in the town ofShawangunk,Ulster County,New York. The oft-quoted height of 187 feet is a gross exaggeration, as anyone who has seen this beautiful falls knows intuitively. On October 15, 2025, a party organized by local historian and naturalist Marc B. Fried and including the president of Friends of the Shawangunks (a regional non-profit) made the only known on-site measurement, using an inclinometer and employing trigonometry, and arrived at a height of approximately 79 feet. A full report of the outing, including the procedure used for arriving at this figure, was published in the "Shawangunk Journal" November 6, 2025, pp. 1, 14. The falls is accessible only via a three-mile-long (4.8 km) trail, part of theLong Path, which branches off from the main trail in Sam's Point Preserve. The waterfall is named after the stream.
