Vörnir is ajötunn inNordic mythology.[1] He is only extant inNafnaþulur in theProse Edda.

The name has been connected to thePIE root*ver- (from*verunyos?), meaning "to cover". Cognates in otherIndo-European languages have been suggested, but remain uncertain. TheVedicVaruna, theMitanni namesaruna andurvana,Uranos, the sky god inGreek mythology, theSlavic godVeles, andvelnias, theLithuanian for "devil".
