HelloThaes, just wanted to drop by to mention something that you might be interested in, since I noticed you are very well versed in theological subjects.Free and Candid Disquisitions is seekingpeer review comments before it goes up for Featured Article. HiFritz! Thanks for the heads up; I'm still getting used to the "back rooms" of Wikipedia, but I'm more than happy to try and help with a peer review. Thanks for pointing it out to me. My Dissenters history is a little spotty, but I'm sure I can contribute something.
And no problem on the Croatian translation. Please don't ever hesitate to ask if you ever need my assistance with Croatian, Serbian, Bosnian, or Montenegrin sources on anything; all of them are mutually intelligible (outside of somelow prestige dialects) and I've created a couple articles using only Croatian sources.ThaesOfereode (talk)19:45, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

April 2024

[edit]

Hello! We don't just revert and revert. First we talk, then we reach consensus, then we change articles. You probably knew thathere but didn't bother. Consensus is not reached through edit summaries but on talk pages.SergeWoodzing (talk)19:05, 7 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

How did you resolve this with this user? I am having the same problem with them today. They keep reverting my edit. They removed something stating it violated MOS, which it does not. This user is instead violating MOS and not communicating.24.60.10.139 (talk)01:01, 2 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
If you follow the above link, you will see that we handled it in the talk page. Please consider discussing the issue with me there instead of bothering other users here.ThaesOfereode (talk)01:19, 2 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Please consider not creating the same problems repeatedly. I do not see it in the talk page which is why I commented here. You also lied to me in the other article. Talk page about responding to the person and about responding to my comment here. You didn’t do either. You have a repeated history of dishonesty and of not following the rules and of not communicating.24.60.10.139 (talk)12:54, 2 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I responded to your inquiry yesterday less than half an hour later. I do have other things to do than discuss this. As for the Stenbock page, I responded appropriately in the talk page, explaining my rationale. There was no further discussion and received no further input, so the matter can be considered settled perWP:SILENT. Given that it is the weakest form of consensus, if another editor were to begin a discussion, I would happily meet them and discuss. Please do not call me a liar because of your unfamiliarity with the process.ThaesOfereode (talk)13:17, 2 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

working on a midwest emo bands list right now and saw that camping in alaska didnt have a page a week ago so i thought i might make one one day and now i see u did it!! cool !!

222emilia222 (talk)21:40, 30 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@222emilia222: Thanks for the message; I really appreciate it! I've been a fan of Midwest emo for a while now, but I just really got intoplease be nice so I made the page. Honestly, seeing the stateMidwest emo is in right now, I was thinking about trying to get it (andEmo revival) up to GA status at some point. I took a look at that draft you got going and it looks great! Do you mind if I contribute to it? You might want to check outisthisbandemo.com as a source; it even hasits own page here on Wikipedia! Thanks again for the message!ThaesOfereode (talk)23:15, 30 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
thank you so much!! i did stumble upon that website while researching but I wasnt sure if it was reliable enough for wikipedias standard. I have to admit i dont fully understand the cut-off.. But now i will definetely use it!
And of course you can contribute to the list! I didnt even know that was possible for drafts??
Again, u did a great job on the camping in alaska page!
PS: what is GA status?222emilia222 (talk)10:32, 1 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@222emilia222: Yeah, I though about that and it probably isn't a great source in and of itself; it might be a good external link for the end of the page or to use as inspiration. If you're curious about reliable sources, you can always confer withWP:RS and there's a fairly regularly updated list of reliable and unreliable sources asWP:RSPSS. For music in general, try tostay away from self-published sources (Wordpress, people's blogs, etc.) and aim towards magazines. And yeah, anything you publish to Wikipedia is public; it may be hard to find but someone will still be able to edit it. I'll take a look and give a hand. "GA status" refers toGood article status. This is a process where editors nominate articles they have done a lot of work on for a very basic peer review and the quality of the page israised to above B class. From there, they can go through more rigorous peer review toFeatured article status, which is supposed to represent the best Wikipedia has to offer. Thanks again for the kind words! And if you ever need a hand working on something or need some help with Wikipedia, always feel free to drop a line here on my talk page!ThaesOfereode (talk)11:17, 1 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Collaboration on Hell in Catholicism Page

[edit]

Hello @ThaesOfereode. I saw your suggestion on the WikiProject Catholicism talk page to fix up theHell in Catholicism page. After reviewing the page, I definitely agree that the page is in need of substantial work, and I would like to help collaborate with you on it. This account that I am using is very new, but I have a bit of experience in editing and adding articles on Wikipedia for several years now.BoatInAStorm (talk)19:53, 29 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@BoatInAStorm: Great! I was starting to worry no one would help me try to fix it. First things first, do you think the sections are good or do you think we should reconsider the layout? I think the current one is okay, but I think either a "by era" (e.g., Patristic era, Middle Ages, etc.) set up or a "by doctrine" (e.g., CCC, revelations, etc.) set up. I'm partial to the first but I'm open to your ideas. From there, we can split up tasks and foci.ThaesOfereode (talk)21:50, 29 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, "mentor" not responding and I have a few questions :)

[edit]

First of all, if you don't want to respond that is totally fine. It's just that my assigned wikipedia mentor hasn't responded to any questions on their talk page in a few months. I get that this isn't a responsibility you asked for, still I would very much appreciate it!

I have two question about citations:

1) I wondered how i would cite something that is in a game, or a movie for that matter. For example an UI element or text in a game, or a dialogue in a movie. Would I have to screenshot the thing in question and reference that image? or can i just directly cite a movie/game/video?

2) How would you go about citing a youtube interview specifically? Is it ok to cite it similiarly to an article (cite web, etc) or do I have to link to a transcript of the interview (if so, assuming i have to transcribe it, where would I post that transcript for it to be considered reliable)?222emilia222 (talk)11:24, 24 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

No problem at all; I'm happy to take on mentorship duties for you.
1. For UI, I think citing the game itself is probably fine enough, since it would constitute a similar rationale as not needing to cite the plot. You could upload a fair use image of the UI to Wikipedia to demonstrate a facet of the game. You can see a really good example of that onThe Thing (video game). With respect to movies, I suspect that would similarly fall under the plot citing policy, but I'm sure a well-articulated fair use rationale could be used there as well.
2. Using{{cite web}} is definitely acceptable, but I would use{{cite AV media}}, since it will allow you to cite the timestamp in a similar way to citing a page in{{cite book}}. With respect to YouTube videos, make sure any claims made followWP:BLPSELFPUB.
Let me know if you need any clarification or have any more questions. I'm happy to help where I can.ThaesOfereode (talk)11:56, 24 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you today for the article, introduced: "Ever wonder why Greek and Sanskrit cognates involving gutturals don't always match up like you expect and usually before an /r/ sound? Yeah, me either. But in 1881, a German linguist commented on this oddity and proposed a sound law to explain it. "Largely forgotten by the scholarly world", the law developed newfound interest when Dutch linguist Alwin Kloekhorst gave the law a full defense in 2011, giving Dr. Weise a high honor: naming it after him. As of now, there are no Proto-Indo-European FAs." --Gerda Arendt (talk)09:02, 22 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Scholarly Barnstar
Many a biographical article on Wikipedia is based mostly on newspapers, obituaries, and sometimes popular biographies. What a treat, then, to see theNicolaas van Wijk article citing festschrifts, academic biographies, and studies that address his contributions to Slavic studies as a linguist! Thank you for contributing this article and going out of your way to read and reference such extensive scholarship about van Wijk's life and legacy.Hydrangeans (she/her |talk |edits)23:14, 5 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
This is a wonderful message; thank you, Hydrangeans. I really enjoy writing on Wikipedia about people and concepts have impacted my field tremendously and have no page (or the page is a stub). Van Wijk's absence from the project, I think, was particularly egregious and it's so kind of you to recognize the hard work that went into it. And how lucky was I that Hinrichs had his (wonderful!) biography translated into English. Thank you again for the kind words.ThaesOfereode (talk)23:41, 5 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding DYK:Suicide in Lesotho

[edit]

Hi! I don't know where else to take this because the submission has been archived but I wanted to ask a few thingsthis DYK nomination. It's my first DYK nomination so I'm not very familiar with the process. You rejected it on the grounds of "at least three statements in the article that need to be cited" and the article being a stub. I corrected the citations marked as they were all information provided in the citations already listed in the same paragraph. Second question, the DYK requirements say the article needs to be more than 1500 characters of prose. Page stadistics say that the article is over 1500 characters of prose. At what point does an article stop being considered a stub? Thank you.BirdCities (talk)18:23, 3 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

HiBirdCities! No worries; I know that some of the processes can be a little opaque at first glance here on Wikipedia. There's no hard-and-fast rule about what constitutes a stub, but in general, a stub is a page that does not contain all the main points of a topic and is less than about 500 words. When we put articles on the Main Page, we want them to be comprehensive enough that people will get a fairly good read out of the subject – though not necessarily as comprehensive as agood article, which is a peer-reviewed article that gives a broad overview of the topic, or afeatured article, which is peer-reviewed several times and gives a fully comprehensive deep-dive into the topic.
So let's take a look at your page. It's great that you fixed up the citation issues; I figured that would be an easy fix, but there are a couple things that could make the page more comprehensive. Compare a similar page, likeSuicide in Greenland. This page is not a full overview of the topic; it's a Start-class article, which is just one step up from a stub. But look how much it includes: history, methods, reasons, etc. It has almost twice as many citations as your page. Since you have a substantial number of edits, I highly recommend utilizing theWikipedia Library, which gives you access to tons of reputably-sourced materials, such asJSTOR and theCambridge University Press! Access to sources like this might give you the information you need to expand the page further. If you expand the page to just 1270 words, you'll be able to renominate it for DYK. If you are interested in doing that, I recommend writing more on the page offline then adding it in one fell swoop so you can take more than seven days to expand the article if you need (since the expansion has to be within seven days of the nomination.
Let me know if you have any more questions or need anything else! Best,ThaesOfereode (talk)22:11, 3 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Dear ThaesOfereode,

Thank you for your criticism of the History section, including putting the {{one source|section|date=October 2024}} template. I tried to make amends by adding references.

  • Could the template be removed, what do you think? What about the other template at the head of the article?

Thank you for considering this request, yours sincerelyHansmuller UBL (talk)15:16, 20 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Excellent work on citing the material! Thank you for all your hard work! I think the{{one source section}} template can be removed, but I believe much more is needed throughout the page in order to remove the template at the top of the article; following two sections of the article are almost completely uncited. If there are pieces of the citations you've added that you think may be relevant to the other sections, please add them! I think appropriated cited, this could make for a very interestingGood article.ThaesOfereode (talk)15:24, 20 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Any chance I can interest you in volunteering forWP:AFCP? We're always in need of sensible people who are good at source criticism and being kind to newbies. --asilvering (talk)00:52, 25 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Sure, I can try and keep an eye on AfCs in my areas of expertise if you could use a hand. Other than applying for reviewership, is there anything I should know/read/be able to do before starting?ThaesOfereode (talk)11:49, 25 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
The full instructions are atWP:AFCR. The short version is: if the draft wouldn't be deleted if it ended up in mainspace, accept. So if the topic is notable, and there isn't something else horribly wrong with it (copyvio, stomach-churningly promotional, etc), we wave it through. Any additional stuff you want to do out of the goodness of your heart (fixing the article up, adding maintenance tags, etc) is up to you. When I started reviewing, I often found that there were articles on academics or books in the queue that were obviously notable, but didn't have the sourcing to show it, so I'd spend a couple of minutes looking for book reviews, add them to the draft, and then accept.
If you have any questions about reviewing, there'sWT:AFC. If you use Discord, there's also the NPP server at[1]. --asilvering (talk)20:40, 25 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Flagging of articleRaymond Hickey

[edit]

Thank you for your updates onRaymond Hickey! You added two flags. Could you please elaborate on the issues? I have updated the dead links. Would that solve your issue or do you have any other concerns? If so, please let me know so I can try and fix them.Honeytree (talk)06:57, 20 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for fixing the dead links! I'm happy to see you working on the page. I don't think either tag has been resolved though. There are still several inappropriate hyperlinks in the body of the article. For guidance on what do with these links, you can take a look atthis policy page.
The page as a whole is still poorly cited and much of what is cited cites Hickey's work, not works about him. The "Education and career" section, for example, has no external citations. It points the reader to his publications, but doesn't give any external sourcing for where, when, or in what he got his degrees.
Please let me know if I can help further; I'm more than happy to do so.ThaesOfereode (talk)10:21, 20 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for providing further information on the tags! I have now added several quality sources to the whole article, especially to the "Education and career" section and added links to other Wikipedia sites. Furthermore, I have turned some direct external links into footnotes.
I'm not quite sure what the issue is with citing Hickey's work. Wouldn't that be the obvious way to prove his input on linguistic research, especially in the "Research contribution" section? Just to make sure, I have also added a festschrift and commentary on his most recent book to add balance.
I did have a look at the policy page but wasn't quite sure where precisely the problem lies, hence my asking you. I hope to have solved the issues with the current update. If not, please let me know where precisely further sources are needed in your opinion.
Thank you very much for your help and the constructive exchange!Honeytree (talk)09:42, 5 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

About English page

[edit]

Hello dear, I hope this message finds you well. I'm reaching out to kindly ask for your assistance in reviewing and possibly approving a draft page I’ve been working on for Wikipedia. I’ve done my best to ensure the content is well-sourced, neutral, and aligned with Wikipedia’s guidelines, but I would greatly appreciate your expert input to make sure everything is in order.

Your support would mean a lot, and I’m more than willing to make any necessary changes based on your feedback.

Thank you very much in advance for your time and help.

Best regards,

Farah

Draft:Fatima Al SafiFarah244 (talk)10:06, 23 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

HiFarah244. There are several issues with this page that I can tell immediately. For one, there are several unsourced statements, including the first two sentences of the Career section. It also appears that one of your sources, elcinema.com, is AI-generated and is not usable as a reliable source. For the layout of the works she's been a part of, I highly recommend looking at other actors' pages, especially ones which have passed eithergood article review or – better yet –featured article review; for example, see the layout onBen Affleck. I can't speak to the reliability of these sources, but you may have better luck seeking out assistance in this regard atWikiProject Qatar or another Arabic-speaking country's WikiProject. Best of luck with your draft page!ThaesOfereode (talk)21:14, 23 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Wonderful, thank you,DasFriskel and welcome to Wikipedia! Information icon Hi ThaesOfereode! I noticed that you have reverted to restore your preferred version of an article several times. The impulse to undo an edit you disagree with is understandable, but I wanted to make sure you're aware that theedit warring policy disallows repeated reversions even if they are justifiable.

All editors are expected to discuss content disputes on articletalk pages to try to reachconsensus. If you are unable to agree, please use one of thedispute resolution options to seek input from others. Using this approach instead of reverting can help you avoid getting drawn into an edit war. Question about pronunciation

[edit]

I noticed the little arc below a letter in the pronunciation ofNicolaas van Wijk, but I couldn't find an explanation onHelp:IPA/Dutch. What does it mean, when should it be added? – Editør (talk)13:20, 10 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

It distinguishes a diphthong from two discrete vowels. In broad transcription (when using //), you don't really need it, but it's good practice to use them in narrow transcriptions (when using []) since some transcriptions don't mark syllable boundaries.ThaesOfereode (talk)14:30, 10 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I've just added onehere, hopefully correctly. Don't you think its use should be explained inHelp:IPA/Dutch? – Editør (talk)14:48, 10 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I do. I also find it kind of strange that the diphthongs that are there aren't marked either. It looks like another editor undid the diphthong marking a little over a month ago. Not sure the path forward on that since I don't usually touch the helpspace.ThaesOfereode (talk)14:55, 10 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

A favour to ask...

[edit]

I've been working recently on expandingJules Gilliéron. I am, however, far out of my depth when it comes to the linguistics content -- if you get a moment, would you mind passing a linguist's eye over it to see if it makes sense, or contains any blindingly obvious howlers?UndercoverClassicistT·C23:10, 12 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Happy to help here (and flattered). Funny coincidence that I just finisheda biography of a Swiss linguist myself. Overall, the linguistic concepts are well telegraphed and I think a high-schooler interested in the topic would be able to follow along fairly well. I didn't notice any glaring errors, though I recommend explaining his role as a noteworthy anti-Neogrammarian early on (if possible) because he comes across as a Neogrammarian for much of this article.
This is really helpful -- thank you. I'll come back to the Neogrammarian question below.UndercoverClassicistT·C09:06, 14 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Small notes below:

  • studying the local dialect – Of what? French?Romansh?
  • Er... complicated question. Gilliéron didn't really believe in grouping and categorising dialects, and he seems to think of the localpatois as its own thing. Here's what he has to say in his preface:

So -- definitely not French in his view -- does that make it Romansch?UndercoverClassicistT·C09:06, 14 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • asking respondents to "translate" words or phrases into their local dialects – Scare quotes here? What would they be doing other than translating?
  • I was worried about the potentially patronising implications that people in the villages were "not speaking French" or "speaking French wrong", if they pronounced a French word in a different way. With hindsight, I think I went in the wrong direction -- it's better to take the dialects seriously by giving them the same treatment as a full-on language. Changed.UndercoverClassicistT·C09:06, 14 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • could be analysed according to mechanistic dialectological laws – I recommend linking this withSound law. The mechanistic part is obviously Neogrammarian, but after finishing reading the article, I don't know whether linking that here is helpful.
  • produce the "dialect" form of a given French word. – Scare quotes again?
  • Not really actionable, but kind of irritating/confusing that acrolect/basilect redirects to "Post-creole continuum"; these dialects are not restricted to creole areas, as is obviously true here.
  • geographic differences of dialect – Soft suggestion to linkIsogloss somewhere around here.
  • I think that's fine, but now that I'm looking at it again, areal linguistics is a bit broader than what's stated. It also seeks to chart interactions (i.e.,contact linguistics + identification ofsprachbünde). Would also rephrase to "linguistic geographic differences" since areal linguistics is not limited to dialect studies (e.g., David Kaufman's work on the Lower Mississippi Valley sprachbund).
  • No objection to rephrasing, but not sure about "linguistic geographic differences" as English: I can't find it in print and it seems ungrammatical (geographic differences that are linguisic in nature?) Could you give me a bit more of a steer on exactly what the distinction you're trying to make here is?UndercoverClassicistT·C16:19, 14 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Basically, areal linguistics are not just differentiating between dialects, but sometimes completely different languages. Biloxi and Ofo were Siouan languages which were areally influenced by its completely unrelated Muskogean neighbors, for example (cf.wave model as well). In the article, it looks like areal linguistics is being described as a subfield of dialectology, which is not really accurate. In other words, it would be better to say it is an areal approach to language rather than a geographical approach to dialect. Does that make sense?ThaesOfereode (talk)16:32, 14 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • simplification of multi-word signifiers into single words – Isn't thisSynecdoche? Or is it somehow broader? If so, recommend checking out the list of typologies inSemantic change and picking an appropriate one to link.
  • I thought synecdoche waspars pro toto and similar -- so "all hands on deck!" when you are talking about thepeople attached to the hands? Gilléron is more interested in e.g. going from calling a bee a "swarm-fly" to just calling it a "swarm", which potentially creates ambiguity when you say "there's a swarm in the garden", or from "wine of Champagne" to "champagne". There's a point somewhere in the article where other scholars point out this is usually much less of a problem than G. thought it was.UndercoverClassicistT·C09:06, 14 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • I mean, it also includestotum pro parte which would cover both of these examples. I would be surprised if he thoughttotum pro parte introduced ambiguity, but notpars pro toto.ThaesOfereode (talk)12:53, 14 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
No, I'm not being clear -- it's not the shifting of senseper se here, but the reduction of signifiers that are many words long into only one of those words. So, hypothetically, if people started referring to "railroad car" just as "cars", that's notpars pro toto -- a car isn'tpart of a railway car -- but it means that speakers no longer distinguish in their speech between a big metal box on rails and a smaller metal box on the road. Since Gilliéron believed that people can't think what they can't say, I assume he thought that this would mean that people would lose the sense that these two were different things.UndercoverClassicistT·C13:27, 14 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I see. I can't think of the right word for it, but I'm not sure if there is one. I'll think about it. If I come across it, I'll be sure to add it.ThaesOfereode (talk)15:17, 14 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • He also criticises Gilliéron for rejecting Neogrammarian linguistics while adopting their position that sound change is regular – Not actionable, but I had him pegged as Neogrammarian while I was reading until this point in the article. His approach really was similar in a lot of ways, it seems.
  • Well, yes -- Ithink that's the point, that he waspersonally critical of the Neogrammarians while quietly agreeing with them on a lot of things. I may need to do some more reading here. Gilliéron is often quoted as saying "every word has its own history", which is (at least on a superficial reading) the opposite view to the Neogrammarian idea that language change works according to exceptionless laws (as a point of personal history, I remember staring down a first-year exam question asking us to reconcile those two perspectives). Of course, the problem with including that is that he didn't actually say it, but I wonder if there's a way of including it as an impression of his general approach to linguistics.UndercoverClassicistT·C09:06, 14 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • When you say "personally critical" do you mean, like, that he had personal beef with Osthoff or something? As for inclusion, it's hard to say. Obviously, a biography would be fairly blunt in explaining his outlook, at least from one perspective, but linguist biographies are sadly few and far between. Did he have any Festschriften written in his honor?ThaesOfereode (talk)12:53, 14 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Not sure, to be honest. There's a chapter in one of the sources about someone who criticisedhim at some length, and I need to add that in. I think "personal beef" with the Neogrammarians might well be right. The closest thing to aFestschrift I can find is Pop and Pop 1959, and it's undoubtedly a vital source, but I'm struggling to get hold of it (currently trying my luck atWP:RX).UndercoverClassicistT·C13:29, 14 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • praises his work with Mongin – Who?
As an aside, you beat me to the punch asking for a little assistance. No pressure, but would you mind taking a look atThe Path to Rome for me? I wrote it in British English perWP:TIES, but I've missed obvious examples before. Probably. William Cullen McBride High School

[edit]

@ThaesOfereode, If I read the DIfference page correctly, you made a recent, and minor change to William Cullen McBride High School, taking out "St. Louis" from "Short description|Catholic preparatory school inSt. Louis, Missouri"

Can you explain, Please? Being so new to all the intricacies, protocols, and regulations in WP, I'm not sure if I've violated some style guide standard or what. I'm not challenging, but would like to understand the reasoning. (Or did I misread the revision?)

Thanks,

Sickingm (Matt Sicking)04:52, 16 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

HiSickingm, I appreciate your interest in getting to know how WP works! In the edit summary, I citedWP:SD40, a policy on Wikipedia that advocates that a page's short description be fewer than forty characters whenever possible. Short descriptions are designed to allow readers to know if they're headed to the right page in the search bar before they click on it. I believed that St. Louis was less descriptive than Missouri, so I decided to truncate the short description there; there are other places calledSaint Louis, after all. I hope this answers your question; if you have any other questions, please feel free to bring them here; William Cullen McBride High School–related or otherwise!ThaesOfereode (talk)05:03, 16 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Got it. I'm glad I asked.
Thanks!Sickingm (Matt Sicking)00:28, 17 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, again, ThaesOfereode. I don't wish to waste your time if I'm over-analyzing here. But I have some thoughts about the rationale you offered above, and I'd like to discuss them to gain more insight into how to think like a veteran WP Author.
True, there are other places called St. Louis; I've located 17 cities with that name. So describing the school as being in St. Louis could leave the reader to wonder which of 17 cities it's in. On the other hand, at least from checking Wikipedia, there is only one state, one river, two universities, one sports team and one historical event named Missouri. No ambiguity over which one might contain a McBride Prep school.
However, those 17 cities comprise less than 1000 square miles in area, whereas the State of Missouri contain 66,000 square miles. So I suppose a case could be made that "Missouri" is less precise than "St. Louis". Also any reference to "St. Louis" on, say, a news program, would be unambiguous to the majority of English speaking persons in North America. (My assertion. I can't back that up with a valid reference.)
And having reviewedWP:SD40 the policy just says it should be "short" and indicates that 83% of short descriptions are less than 40 words. I interpret <40 to be a goal, not a policy.
So my suggestion (for which I know I don't need your approval, but would definitely appreciate your opinion) is to change "Catholic preparatory school for boys in Missouri" (40 letters) to "Catholic preparatory school for boys in St. Louis MO" (43 letters) or perhaps "Catholic boys preparatory school in St. Louis MO" (40 letters)
(Yep, i've over-analyzed.)Sickingm (Matt Sicking)02:04, 17 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
No worries, Matt; always happy to help a new editor out! Yes, strictly speaking, the forty-character limit is a goal rather than a mandate, but it's a strongly recommended one. Remember that the short description is principally for one thing: to make sure that what a reader is headed to is the page they are looking for (I recommendthis essay). A good example comes from my field of linguistics. Imagine I am looking for asound law in Proto-Indo-European and can't quite remember the name. Was itSieverts's law? Short description tells me immediately no: "Physical law of gas solubility in metals". Well, maybe it wasSievers's law? Yep: "Proto-Indo-European language sound law". For a lot of readers, especially those who visually impaired, the space can be extremely limited and forty characters is typically a good balance between brevity and clarity. There's an argument to be made that maybe my edit was unnecessary; a seasoned editor might contend that, especially since whileSaint Louis leads to a disambiguation,St. Louis does not (the implication being that St. Louis isobviously the one in Missouri). My motivation was that, Catholicism is more closely associated with France than Missouri (there are many times more French Catholics than there are Missourians total); you can imagine a Catholic preparatory school being in the St. Louis suburb ofMarseille, so I believed Missouri was more helpful to the reader. But I might be wrong, or at least there may be an argument against me! Feel free to respectfully challenge editors in the talk page or discuss at a WikiProject. Wikipedia is a collaborative effort after all! I won't object if you change it back.ThaesOfereode (talk)00:55, 18 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Revert

[edit]

You reverted my contribution. ([2])

  1. I deleted the wholeAdvantages and disadvantages because it is not verified and seems to beWP:OR; and I consider this is a kind of pseudo-science.
  2. The article needs a lot of fix. What is your suggestion?
  3. This article may need to be rewritten to comply with Wikipedia's quality standards. Thus, you are not suitable to revert me here, as it already is problematic.

Noordpunt (talk)21:39, 31 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Noordpunt, thanks for the note. I really appreciate your ambition and commitment to the Wikipedia idea ofbeing bold. I know some reversions can be opaque to new users so I'm happy to explain myself here.
  1. The "Advantages and disadvantages" section appears to be mostly uncited, but that is not necessarily consistent withWP:OR. Original research is that which cannot be substantiated with already published sources. Just because something is uncited doesn't mean it's original research; the Wikipedia policy page you've cited to contains: "reliable source must have been published and still exist—somewhere in the world, in any language, whether or not it is reachable online—even if no source is currently named in the article. Articles that currently name zero references of any type may be fully compliant with this policy—so long as there is areasonable expectation that editors couldfind a published, reliable source to support every bit of material".
  2. I agree; that article is in poor shape! My first suggestion is to add some citations. Go out, find reliable sources, and add them to the page. I find that often a simple web search will rarely turn up an answer for an uncited paragraph, but you will find the answers to lots of stuff by combing through the topic at hand. If you can, try accessing theWikipedia Library, which gives you access to countless reliable, scholarly sources. For linguistics and languages, I recommend mining De Gruyter, Brill, and Project MUSE for publications. If you need help getting access to a source there, feel free to reach out to me again; I have access to all three!
  3. The article may need to be rewritten, but that is not necessarily cause to delete entire sections wholesale. That kind of banner tag is typically used when the tone is inappropriate for an encyclopedia or if the organization of the page is not consonant with its subject or the project at large (e.g., a list article that should be a prose article or vice versa), though some editors may also add it when they probably should've placed a{{cleanup}} or{{disputed}} tag instead. That appears to have been the case here.
Please let me know if you have any more questions; I'm happy to help!ThaesOfereode (talk)01:54, 1 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for replying. Now I will express my personal non-professional analysis on that section, not just in the sight of Wikipedia policies.
  1. This section is full of pseudo-science. As I know, many pseudo-science researches are also OR. We should not judge the advantages and disadvantages of a kind of writing, as it will be immediately fail in a peer review. For example, the text I deleted says, "The main difference between logograms and other writing systems is that the graphemes are not linked directly to their pronunciation. An advantage of this separation is that understanding of the pronunciation or language of the writer is unnecessary, e.g. 1 is understood regardless of whether it be called one, ichi or wāḥid by its reader. Likewise, people speaking different varieties of Chinese may not understand each other in speaking, but may do so to a significant extent in writing even if they do not write in Standard Chinese". Oh my goodness! It looks like someone learnt it from aWP:UGC source created by someone who knowsnothing in linguistics. It doesn't matter if it is a logogram, alphabet,Maya script, abjad orsyllabary.musika, a word in Basque meaning "music" ([3]).Basque is alanguage isolate; however, we can guess if we speak English. And仕草 =behavior. No Chinese can guess the correct meaning. This is why I consider we cannot find any RS.
  2. Patrick Chamoiseau, one of the Caribbean's leading writer, tells us, "no hierarchy exists between languages". ([4])
Noordpunt (talk)18:32, 1 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
I don't have an objection per se to the removal of certain information, but I do object to your deletion of an entire section of text without so much as an edit summary. As an editor with a page on my watchlist, if the editor does not indicate the rationale for the removal, how am I to interpret that? Moreover, orthographic studieshave discussed the relative advantages and disadvantages of certain writing systems; this is certainly not pseudoscience. In Chinese specifically, this argument – while poorly executed – touches on the concept of orthographic conservatism. It is why a Chinese speaker can understand elements of thousand-year-old Chinese sentences (or at least grasp the general topic), whereas an English speaker would have difficulty discerning much of even 11th-century English.
This editor is not saying that all languages which share a logography use those characters interchangeably, but rather that an advantage of the system is that transposition can be used within a language or language family. Consider for a moment the Chinese word for China. If you were to write it in an alphabet for modern Standard Mandarin as Zhongguo and I were to write it in Puxian Min as Doenggorh, each would be completely unintelligible to the other, but if we both use 中國 we can both understand. This is not to say that Mandarin or Min are better than the other – it is true that no language is inherently better than another! – but to declare that writing systems are composed of different strategies of written communication that have objective and subjective advantages and disadvantages. This is not pseudoscience; there even existsa peer-reviewed journal which often covers this very topic published byEast China Normal University. Whether that is within the scope of the page at hand, I would suggest taking such a large deletion for discussion tothe article's talk page.ThaesOfereode (talk)18:57, 1 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
No. You said, "It is why a Chinese speaker can understand elements of thousand-year-old Chinese sentences (or at least grasp the general topic), whereas an English speaker would have difficulty discerning much of even 11th-century English." I can tell that you will not be able to read Classical Chinese thousand years ago if you have never learnt.关关雎鸠,在河之洲。窈窕淑女,君子好逑。参差荇菜,左右流之。窈窕淑女,寤寐求之。A famousShijing verse. This is very difficult for a normal Chinese user to explain. And I have to point out, "English speaker would have difficulty discerning much of even 11th-century English." is because English borrowed a lot of words from French; and the grammar changed a lot. It has nothing to do with the dis- or advantage of alphabet. meant hot water but today meanssoup.
Therefore, this is the reason why I stated it as "pseudo-science". I can find so many examples to rebut.Noordpunt (talk)19:19, 1 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
I think you may be misunderstanding me. In Classical Chinese, 女 is 'woman'. In modern Chinese, 女 is 'woman'. I am an out-of-practice L2 Chinese learner and even I know that 鸠 is some kind of bird, 河之洲 has something to do with bodies of water, and 君子 is a some sort of authority or respectable person. My point is clearly not that modern Chinese speakers can understand perfect Classical Chinese; it's that that Shijing verse is much more readable to a modern Chinese speaker than the opening line ofBeowulf (Hƿæt! Ƿe Gardena in geardagum, //þeodcyninga, þrym gefrunon, //hu ða æþelingas ellen fremedon.) is to a modern English speaker, despite the fact that the Shijing is a thousand years older. This isnothing to say of the languageper se only the instrument by which it is written; a language is not coterminous with the way it's written down. Imagine for example that the wordþeodcyning, composed ofþeod ('people') andcyning ('king') had been written 民王; a thousand years later, without any indication whatsoever of the phonological and grammatical changes, this would be immediately recognizable as 'the people's king'.Beowulf might still be a difficult read, but you would be able to get much more out of it without assistance as a modern English speaker than when it's written in alphabetic script. That's advantageous if you're reading ancient literature. That's all that means. That is not pseudoscience; that is a demonstrable fact of a logographic system.ThaesOfereode (talk)20:03, 1 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Due toWP:NOTFORUM, it is not a good choice to discuss things not related to Wikipedia per se; however, I recommend you to learn more about linguistics, because you always limit your examples in Latin alphabet and Hanzi. I have another example, theTibetan script. There is no standard dialect in Tibetan; however, the spelling is same. This script is neither alphabet nor logogram - it isabugida. AndΠλάτων, the Greek philosopherPlato, is that spelling for thousand years (unlike English, Greek was relatively not changed a lot).
And if your statement is correct onHanzi that "It never changes the spelling in the long history", then I don't know how to explainwritten Cantonese,Min Chinese,Zhuang,Chu Nom,Man'yogana writing. These systems use Chinese character but highly based on written on their own pronunciation.Noordpunt (talk)17:20, 2 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not going to continue to litigate this at length with you here; if you are that frustrated by its inclusion, please take it to the appropriate talk page and gather consensus there. I am going toassume good faith here with your recommendation, but I have a degree in linguistics and I spend a lot of personal time devoted to learning more about it. Please do not confuse my limited use of examples to express a possible rationale as my being ignorant of a topic. I limited our discussion here to Chinese and English because I know those are two languages we both can understand and you began your counterexamples with Chinese. I admit that Tibetan represents a good example of a counterpoint; I do not pretend to have a strong opinion in the suitability for one script over another, only I express an openness that there are tradeoffs to different modes of writing. Moreover, yes, varieties of Chinese (and Sino-Xenic characters) are different from Standard Chinese usage, but especially for varieties in China, the majority of these characters are shared; the Cantonese and Standard Chinese pages for the page we are discussing have identical titles, for example. I would argue Chu Nom and (especially)Sawndip are so divergent as to be considered descendant scripts rather than alternative Chinese scripts, but that is an opinion and not the subject of debate here.
I recommend keeping in mind that every time you blank major sections of a page, you are often deleting hours of work by someone else, often several authors; it should not be blanked lightly. Especially on central and important pages, it is critical that if you are reverted, you develop consensusthere and remember thatsilence can used as consensus if there is no response within a reasonable amount of time. It is even more critical that you use edit summaries so that an editor will not mistake you for a vandal or mistake a good faith effort for a bad faith one when you are making bold edits. Bold edits make Wikipedia great, but you have to be willing to defend them and defend them in the appropriate theater. I look forward to your comments at our Good Article discussion.ThaesOfereode (talk)18:37, 2 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]

The nomination discussion and review may be seen atTemplate:Did you know nominations/Marc L. Greenberg. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page(here's how,Marc L. Greenberg), and the hook may be added tothe statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free tonominate it.

The Original Barnstar
Brilliant work onMarc L. Greenberg, one of the best DYK bios I've seen in a while. Great structure and use of sources throughout the read. You've set a high bar!Morogris ()04:04, 11 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Wow, thanks for the kind words, Morogris; I didn't expect such positive recognition! It was a fun little in-between project to work on while ticking away atGrammatical aspect in the Slavic languages.ThaesOfereode (talk)12:46, 11 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]

PIE Sound Laws

[edit]

The loss of the sound law table is tremendous. It was incredibly useful for research, at least for an at-a-glance conspectus of correspondences. I disagree deeply and absolutely with the redirect to the glossary which is by no means useful to navigate. Even if the table was largely unsourced, it was for the most part highly accurate. The difficulty with citing all the changes in the table is precisely proportional to the difficulty an individual must now undergo in order to find the sound correspondences in the very disparate literature. It served a great purpose and its loss is an unthinkable injustice. Consider that the helpful links to the old pagehere are now broken and no longer answer the question of where to find a comprehensive chart of sound correspondences. This is not the only example. These tables were used by a large amount of people, and for good reason. I implore you to reconsider the decision to redirect for the time being.Arxandr (talk)20:21, 11 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Arxandr, thanks for the message and I appreciate your concern. There is currently a semi-revived discussion onthe talk page of the associated WikiProject discussing alternative approaches to this issue, though a secondary consensus has not been reached. I encourage you to enter the conversation there; I have suggested moving the unsourced article to "Indo-European sound correspondences" and maintaining a hatnote; associated old pages would be able to link and readers can sort out what they were really looking for. Another editor has objected to this plan, but I am happy to re-engage as others have expressed similar concerns after consensus had been reached by the WikiProject. I'm inclined, personally, to reinstate the page under the new title, but I do respect the editor's objection to a lack of sourcing. With this in mind, the page is not gone; I have taken the tables and placed them in my userspacehere for the time being. Feel free to ping as necessary on the WikiProject's talk page.ThaesOfereode (talk)23:55, 11 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
