TheTop Four Cup was an association footballsuper cup featuring the top four clubs in theLeague of Ireland. It was first held in1955–56 and last played for in1973–74. It was played at the end of the season.Shamrock Rovers were the inaugural winners and subsequently featured in seven finals.[1]Waterford won the competition the most times, five times in total.[2] The competition was sponsored by theIrish Independent and a result was also known as theIndependent Cup.[3][4] The cup was last won byCork Celtic and is currently on display in the Evergreen Bar inTurners Cross, Cork. During the late 1960s the(Northern) Irish Football League also organised aTop Four Cup. Between1998 and2001 theFAI organised a similar formatted competition known as theFAI Super Cup.
