Toma Bašić (Croatian pronunciation:[tômabâʃitɕ];[1][2] born 25 November 1996) is a Croatian professionalfootballer who plays as amidfielder forSerie A clubLazio.

Club career

Early career

Bašić went through the ranks ofNK Zagreb before signing forHajduk Split in 2014, the same generation asFran Tudor.[3] However, he remained inZagreb, having been immediately sent on loan to theDruga HNL clubRudeš for the remainder of theseason. The beginning of the2015–16 season saw him playing forHajduk Split, balancing between the main andreserve squads. Bašić made his first teamleague debut on 10 August 2015 in a 1–2 away victory againstLokomotiva, coming in forAndrija Balić in the 84th minute.[4]

In August 2018, Bašić joinedLigue 1 clubBordeaux for €3.5 million on a four-year contract.[5] He debuted on 12 August in a 2–0 home defeat againstStrasbourg, coming on in 72nd minute forAurélien Tchouaméni.[6] On 19 December, he scored his first goal for the club in aCoupe de la Ligue match againstDijon that ended in a 1–0 victory.[7]

Italy

On 25 August 2021, Bašić signed forSerie A clubLazio.[8] He made his debut on 12 September in a 2–0 defeat againstMilan, coming on in 74th minute forSergej Milinković-Savić.[9] He scored his debut goal on 30 September in aEuropa League 2–0 victory againstLokomotiv Moscow.[10]

On 17 January 2024, Bašić moved on loan toSalernitana until the end of the season.[11]

International career

Bašić was selected toNenad Gračan's 23-mansquad forUEFA Under-21 Euro 2019, remaining an unused substitute throughout the tournament asCroatia finished last in theirgroup.[12]

On 4 November 2020, Bašić received his first call-up to theCroatian senior team by head coachZlatko Dalić for matches that same month againstTurkey,Sweden, andPortugal.[13] Bašić debuted on 11 November, playing the last 30 minutes in a friendly 3–3 draw against the former opponent, in which he broke the ball.[14]

On 17 May 2021, Bašić was included in Dalić's preliminary 34-man squad for theUEFA Euro 2020;[15] however, he did not make thefinal 26.[16]

Personal life

Bašić was born and raised in theDubrava neighborhood ofZagreb, and was a fan ofHajduk Split through his father, who is originally fromPirovac inDalmatia.[17][3] He has a twin brotherJakov, who is also a footballer.[18]
