The Neighbourhood (abbreviated asThe NBHD) is an Americanalternative rock band formed inNewbury Park, California, in 2011. The band is composed of vocalistJesse Rutherford, guitarists Jeremy Freedman and Zach Abels, bassist Mikey Margott and drummer Brandon Fried. After releasing two EPs,I'm Sorry... andThank You, the Neighbourhood signed withColumbia Records to release their debut studio album,I Love You. (2013). "Sweater Weather", the album's third single, became their sole entry on theBillboard Hot 100—peaking at number 14—and re-surged in popularity nearly a decade later onradio airplay andSpotify.[1][2] Other notable hits from the band include "Afraid", "Daddy Issues", "Softcore", "You Get Me So High", "Reflections" and "The Beach".
The same year, the EPThe Love Collection was released, followed by amixtape titled#000000 & #FFFFFF in 2014. The band's second studio album,Wiped Out! was released in 2015. In March 2018, theirself-titled third studio album was released, preceded by the EPsHard andTo Imagine, and followed by the EPEver Changing. Tracks from these EPs not included on the final album were later compiled into the LPHard to Imagine the Neighbourhood Ever Changing. In February 2022, it was reported that the band was taking a hiatus, following the removal of lead drummer Brandon Fried, who faced allegations of sexual misconduct involving María Zardoya ofThe Marías.[3] In August 2025, they posted a story indicating their return to creating and releasing music, with Fried rejoining the band.[4]
The Neighbourhood was formed in August 2011 by the singer Jesse Rutherford, guitarists Zachary Abels and Jeremiah Freedman, bass guitarist Michael Margott and drummer Bryan "Olivver" Sammis. The members of the Neighbourhood chose theBritish spelling of "neighbourhood" on the advice of their manager, in order to distinguish themselves from a band already using the American spelling; hence, their song names also use theBritish spelling.[8]
In early 2012, the Neighbourhood released "Female Robbery" and "Sweater Weather".[9] In May 2012, the band unveiled their debut self-releasedextended play titledI'm Sorry... for freedownload, produced by Justyn Pilbrow.[10] In December 2012, the Neighbourhood released their second EP,Thank You,.[11]
The band performed atCoachella in 2013,[12] anticipating their debut albumI Love You., which was premiered on April 16, 2013, viaRolling Stone[13] and officially released on April 23, 2013, viaColumbia Records. It debuted at number 39 on the USBillboard 200 albums chart, selling 9,000 units in its first week.[14] It was preceded by the lead single "Sweater Weather", which music video was released on March 5, 2013.[15] They made their first televised performance of the song on June 27, 2013, atJimmy Kimmel Live.[16] "Sweater Weather" topped the charts in early June 2013, reaching number one onBillboardAlternative Songs chart[17] and breaking the top ten onBillboardHeatseekers Songs chart.[18]
The band went on tour opening forImagine Dragons in July and September 2013.[19] The Neighbourhood also made two appearances in Eastern Canada during the summer of 2013. They played as one of the headliners of Toronto, Canada'sEdgefest on July 31, 2013,[20] and then a few days later played at Canada's largest music festival,Osheaga, in Montreal on August 4.[21] The Neighbourhood performed at Atlanta'sMusic Midtown on September 21, 2013.[22]
On January 16, 2014, the band revealed via social media that drummer Bryan Sammis was leaving the band.[23]
In April 2013, the Neighbourhood announced their summer 2013 tour called The Love Collection Tour along with Lovelife,the 1975, andJMSN.[24] as well as that they were planning the release of amixtape.[25] On December 10, 2013, they released a new EP calledThe Love Collection.[26] On November 28, 2014, the band finally released the project, titled#000000 & #FFFFFF (thehexadecimal color codes for black and white, respectively) for free.[27] It was hosted byDJ Drama and features guest appearances byYG,Dej Loaf,French Montana,Danny Brown,G-Eazy and others.[28] The mixtape was officially released for streaming and download on November 22, 2017.[29]
In August 2015, the band announced the upcoming October 30 release of their second albumWiped Out!. It was preceded by the lead single "R.I.P. 2 My Youth"[30] and reached the number 13 position on the US Billboard 200.[31] The band embarked on a European tour in November 2015[32] and on an American tour in May and June 2016 to support the album.[33]
Hard to Imagine, eponymous album,Chip Chrome & the Mono-Tones and hiatus (2017–2025)
On September 21, 2017, the Neighbourhood released the EPHard,[34][35] which reached number 183 on the USBillboard 200 chart.[31] Another EP calledTo Imagine was released on January 12, 2018.[36] The band later announced their third studio albumThe Neighbourhood, released March 9, 2018, which included tracks from the previous extended plays, including the lead single "Scary Love".[37] After the release, the tracks from the extended plays that were not included on the final tracklisting were collected in another EP calledHard to Imagine.[38] The band then released the complete edition of the album, titledHard to Imagine the Neighbourhood Ever Changing which featured all songs released fromHard,To Imagine,The Neighbourhood, andEver Changing, except the two tracks "Revenge" and "Too Serious".
On August 16, 2019, they premiered a music video along with their single, "Middle of Somewhere".[39] On October 10, 2019, the Neighbourhood's single, "Yellow Box" was released and featured on an action game,Death Stranding.[40] They released a lyric video for "Yellow Box" on November 7, 2019.[41]
On July 31, 2020, the band announced the September 25 release of their fourth albumChip Chrome & the Mono-Tones. It was preceded by a single "Cherry Flavoured", which they released in a playlist named after the album via various streaming services. The playlist is a compilation of the band's essential songs, plus the single. In description of the playlist was, quote: "Album out 9/25".
In late 2020, their songs "Sweater Weather", from their albumI Love You. and "Daddy Issues" from their album,Wiped Out!, went viral onTikTok, garnering new streaming highs.[42]
In February 2022, the band announced that they would be taking a hiatus.
On November 13, 2022, the band announced on social media that drummer Brandon Fried would no longer be in the Neighbourhood afterMarías lead vocalist María Zardoya accused him of sexual assault.[3]
On August 29, 2025, the official Instagram account of The Neighbourhood posted a story, indicating their return to creating and releasing music. Additionally, they announced drummer Brandon Fried would return to the band.[43]
On October 23, 2025, the band released three songs, "OMG", "Lovebomb", and "Private", from their fifth studio album titledUltrasound (stylized as(((((ultraSOUND)))))), released on November 14, 2025.[43]
