This is a (probably-temporary) template used by @BrownHairedGirl (aka 'BHG') to mark somebare URL references toThe Washington Post newspaper (WaPo) which have been filled by BHG's custom WaPoFill tool, but where the dates need to be manually checked.
The reason is that the tool extracts dates from the metadata of the linked article, and in some cases the dates in the metadata do not fully match those displayed to the reader.
For example, in the articleClifton, Virginia, the tool madethis edit to fill two bare URL refs:
<ref>https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/virginia-politics/ginni-thomas-black-lives-matter-clifton/2020/07/09/c7b3bb98-c1f5-11ea-9fdd-b7ac6b051dc8_story.html</ref> →<ref>{{cite news |url=https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/virginia-politics/ginni-thomas-black-lives-matter-clifton/2020/07/09/c7b3bb98-c1f5-11ea-9fdd-b7ac6b051dc8_story.html |title=A small, mostly white Virginia town put up a 'Black Lives Matter' banner. Ginni Thomas denounced it. |date=2020-07-10 |orig-date=2020-07-09 |author1=Patricia Sullivan |newspaper=[[The Washington Post]] |place=Washington, D.C. |issn=0190-8286 |oclc=1330888409}}{{WaPoCheckDates}}</ref><ref>https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/virginia-politics/clifton-black-lives-matter-banner-stolen/2020/07/21/8d8827d0-cb99-11ea-91f1-28aca4d833a0_story.html</ref> →<ref>{{cite news |url=https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/virginia-politics/clifton-black-lives-matter-banner-stolen/2020/07/21/8d8827d0-cb99-11ea-91f1-28aca4d833a0_story.html |title=Vandals tear down 'Black Lives Matter' banner in small Virginia town |date=2020-07-22 |orig-date=2020-07-21 |author1=Patricia Sullivan |newspaper=[[The Washington Post]] |place=Washington, D.C. |issn=0190-8286 |oclc=1330888409}}{{WaPoCheckDates}}</ref>When manually checked against the displayed article text, it turned out that in both cases the article displayed only one date, rather than a date plus a second "update on" date:
|date=2020-07-10|orig-date=2020-07-21Those dates were cleaned up inthis edit, when the{{WaPoCheckDates}} tags were removed.
Sometimes, the correct date is neither of the two dates (such asthis edit to Nucla, Colorado), or the double "updated on" date is correct (such asthis edit to Action (Italian political party)).
Please donot use this template. It shouldonly be added by the WaPoFill tool.
If you see the template displayed, it would be great if you could take a moment to check the dates in the reference... and then when the dates have been fixed (or verified as accurate), just remove{{WaPoCheckDates}}
But please donot remove the{{WaPoCheckDates}} tag unless you have verified that the dates displayed in the reference match those displayed in the article
Because @Citation bot can never fill refs toThe Washington Post (WaPo). It is a widely-used source: there are links to www.washingtonpost.com fromover 70,000 articles.
By June 2022 there were over 900bare URL refs tohttps://www.washingtonpost.com, with several more being added every day.
Filling them manually would have been a huge job, andWP:REFLINKS does only a mediocre job with WaPo, so the easiest way to fill them was to write aPerl script which is used withAutoWikiBrowser (AWB). The backlog was cleared in a few days in June 2002, and the script is still run regularly to fill new bare URL refs.
