You could probably improve on this, Gentle Reader:

For example, the autobiography of an American Civil War general might include sections on the nature of slavery, the origins of the Civil War, and the political career of Abraham Lincoln. But the memoir of a Civil War general would focus on his personal reasons for joining the battle, the effect of the war on his mind and soul, and the joy and fear he felt on the battlefield.

What is the relation between the claim that St. Augustine's Confessions is the first autobiography and the subsection "apologia," which states that apologia's are early forms of autobiographies?

In tidying up the article I have removed the section 'notable autobiographies' to a new articleList of autobiographies, for two reasons:

• 1) General WP articles should not contain long, distracting, lists (seeWP:Lists)
• 2) There is no way of defining 'notable' - better therefore to have a separateNPOVcomprehensive list, to avoid pointless argument.
