Stanley Lieberson

American sociologist (1933–2018)

Stanley Lieberson (April 20, 1933 – March 19, 2018) was an American sociologist.

Born inMontreal,Quebec, Canada, Lieberson was raised inBrooklyn and graduated fromAbraham Lincoln High School before attendingBrooklyn College. Lieberson completed graduate study at theUniversity of Chicago.[1] He taught at theUniversity of Washington from 1967 to 1971,[2] then joinedHarvard University as the Abbott Lawrence Lowell Research Professor of Sociology.[3] Over the course of his career, Lieberson was awarded aGuggenheim Fellowship,[4] named a member of theNational Academy of Sciences[5] and theAmerican Philosophical Society,[6] granted fellowship to theAmerican Academy of Arts and Sciences,[7] and served theAmerican Sociological Association as its president.[8] He died on March 19, 2018.[9][10] Volume 49 of the journalSociological Methodology, published in 2019, was dedicated to Lieberson.[11]
