Thesecretary of state of Montana is one of the elected constitutional officers ofexecutive branch of theU.S. state ofMontana.

The current secretary of state isChristi Jacobsen.

The Secretary of State's Office is composed of five divisions:

• TheAdministrative Rules Services Division is theadministrative law arm of the Secretary's office, filing rule notices, rule adoptions, and interpretations, and publishing thestate register twice a month. The state's code ofregulations, the Administrative Rules of Montana, is updated quarterly.
• TheBusiness Services Division registersbusiness entities,trademarks,assumed business names, andliens made under theUniform Commercial Code and Federal Food Security Act.
• TheCertification and Notaries Division licenses and trainsnotaries public and certifies documents.
• TheElections and Government Services division administerselections andvoter registration.Campaign finance andlobbying is regulated by a separate agency, theCommissioner of Political Practices.
• TheRecords Management Bureau maintains the records of state and local governments.

The Secretary is the keeper of theMontana state seal, and also serves on the Montana Board of Land Commissioners, which administers school trust lands.^[1]

The Montana Secretary of State Records Center, located inHelena, shares the duty of archiving official state e-mails with an archivist who reports to the Governor.^[2]

To be eligible to be a Secretary of State of Montana, a candidate must be 25 years old or older, a United States citizen, and a Montana resident for at least two years before election.^[3]
