Cyrillic letter used in various languages
Schwa (Ә ә; italics:Ә ә ) is a letter of theCyrillic script , derived from theLatin letter schwa . It is used inAbkhaz ,Bashkir ,Dungan ,Itelmen ,Kalmyk ,Kazakh ,Khanty ,Kurdish ,Uyghur andTatar . It was also used inAzeri (still used by Azeri speakers in Dagestan),Karakalpak , andTurkmen before those languages switched to theLatin alphabet . The Azeri and some other Latin-derived alphabets contain a letter of identical appearance (Ə/ə ).
In manyTurkic languages such asAzeri ,Bashkir ,Kazakh ,Uyghur andTatar , as well as theKalmyk andKhinalug languages, it represents thenear-open front unrounded vowel /æ/ , like the pronunciation of⟨a⟩ in "ca t". It is often transliterated as⟨ä⟩ .
InDungan , it represents theclose-mid back unrounded vowel /ɤ/ .
InKurdish , it represents the sound/ε~æ/ .
InAbkhaz , it is a modifier letter, which representslabialization of the preceding consonant/ʷ/ .Digraphs with⟨ә⟩ are treated as letters and given separate positions in theAbkhaz alphabet . It istransliterated into Latin as a superscript w:⟨ʷ⟩ .
In 2013,Khanty alphabets represents it as thereduced mid central vowel /ə/ .[ 1]
