Asweetroll orsweetbun refers to any of a number of sweet, baked,yeast-leavenedbreakfast ordessert foods. They may containspices,nuts,candied fruits,poppy seeds, etc., and are oftenglazed or topped withicing.[1] Compared to regular breaddough, sweet roll dough generally has higher levels of sugar, fat, eggs, and yeast.[2] They are often round,[3] and are small enough to comprise asingle serving.[4] These differ frompastries, which are made from apaste-likebatter;[5] fromcakes, which are typically unleavened or chemically leavened;[6] and fromdoughnuts, which aredeep fried.[7]

Refrigerated ready-to-bake sweet roll dough is commercially available in grocery stores.[8]

Sweet rolls are sometimes iced and/or contain a sweet filling.[9][10] In some traditions, other types of fillings and decoration are used, such as cinnamon,marzipan,[11] or candied fruit.[12]

Schnecken are a type of sweet bun or roll ofGerman origin. They typically containraisins. The nameSchnecken meanssnails in German and refers to the shape of the pastry. The bun is still common in Germany, Switzerland and Austria (in some regions asSchneckennudel[13]), where the name isSchnecke (which is the German singular ofSchnecken), and in other parts of northern Europe. They are more commonly known aspain au raisin in France. Popular variants are Nussschnecken (filled with nuts and often raisins as well), Mohnschnecken (with apoppyseed filling) and Zimtschnecken, which are quite similar tocinnamon rolls andChelsea buns.

Sweet buns are popular type of pastry in Poland, especially for asecond breakfast.
