Sam Star is the stage name ofSam Purkey (born January 24, 2000),[1][2] an American drag performer who competed onLove for the Arts[3] and theseventeenth season ofRuPaul's Drag Race.[4]
Sam Star is an American drag performer. She has competed inpageantry, having been crowned Miss Glamorous Newcomer 2022.[5] Her "drag mother" is three-timeDrag Race alumTrinity the Tuck. She is additionally a retired gymnast and cheerleader.[4]
Sam Star featured onTrinity the Tuck's single "Six Six Sex" alongside fellowDrag Race castmateJewels Sparkles andShontelle Sparkles.[6] On the second episode ofRuPaul's Drag RaceSeason 17, she performed her debut single "Say Yeehaw!", produced and co-written byDrew Louis.[7] Her Instagram following grew by 865 percent as the show aired.[8]
Sam Star was born and raised inLeeds, Alabama and attended high school there.[9] They are currently based in the suburb.[10] They attended theUniversity of Alabama’s musical theatre program, but dropped out when told the cost of textbooks.[11]
On episode six ofRuPaul's Drag Race season 17, Sam revealed that their godfather is former NBA playerCharles Barkley.[12] Barkley attended high school with Sam's mom, and helped raise them.[13]
