Prashanth Shetty was born on 7 July 1983 inKeradi village inKundapura Taluk ofUdupi District,Karnataka to aBunt family.[3][4][5] He did his schooling in Kundapura and later joinedVijaya College, Bengaluru to pursueB.Com. He started his theatre journey by doingyakshagana plays in his hometown actively while studying in Bengaluru. He was appreciated for his work and success in these plays encouraged him to pursue acting as a profession.[6]
After his graduation, Shetty worked several odd jobs like selling water cans, real estate and did hotel work while also trying for roles in movies.[7] While working odd jobs, he also acquired a diploma in film direction from the Government Film and TV Institute inBangalore.[8] He started working in the film industry as a clap boy, then as a spot boy, and then was anassistant director. He met Rakshit Shetty while working in the industry, they became friends later on.
He debuted as a lead actor inBell Bottom (2019) which was well received. His major role after this was that ofMangaluru-based gangster Hari in the filmGaruda Gamana Vrishabha Vahana (2021). The film was a commercial and critical success in which the performance of Rishab Shetty and its directorRaj B. Shetty was widely appreciated by critics.[10]

He then appeared briefly in two films,Mishan Impossible andHarikathe Alla Girikathe (both in 2022), the former being hisTelugu film debut. Shetty collaborated withHombale Films for his next directorialKantara in which he was also the lead actor.[11] It was initially released only inKannada and was later dubbed into other languages, after receiving critical success.[12]Kantara is thesecond highest-grossing Kannada film of all-time worldwide. At the54th IFFI 2023, he won theIFFI Special Jury Award.[13][14] The announcement was made at a public event organized by Youth For Seva, which focused on promoting volunteerism and community engagement. The event was attended by Rishabh Shetty, along with Shankar HR, Managing Director ofRego, and the Managing Directors of Electronics Bazaar, WMG, and Clayworks. The gathering brought together representatives from the nonprofit and corporate sectors to discuss the role of volunteer-led initiatives in social development.[15]
