Burnsius oileus, thetropical checkered skipper, is a species ofskipper (familyHesperiidae). It is found in the United States (PeninsularFlorida, the Gulf Coast, and southernTexas), south through theWest Indies, Mexico and Central America to Costa Rica.[2] It was transferred to genusBurnsius in 2019, and was previously known asPyrgus oileus.[3]
Thewingspan is 32–38 mm. There are four to five generations throughout the year in southern Texas and Florida.
Thelarvae feed on several plants in the familyMalvaceae, includingSida rhombifolia,Malva,Althaea rosea,Abutilon andMalvastrum. Adults feed on the nectar of the flowers ofSidas species and small-flowered composites such as shepherd's needles.
