TheProtestant Methodist Church in Benin was founded byMethodist missionary and colonial official inWest Africa,Thomas Birch Freeman in 1843. He was sent by theMethodist Missionary Society inLondon. Freeman was the son of afreed slave.
The Methodist Church inBenin is organised into 15synods,[1] and covers the whole country. There are around 90,000 members in 420congregations and 72ordainedpastors.[2]
In 2023 the president is The Revd Dr Kponjesu Amos Hounsa. He is based onCotonou.[3]
