Portrait of John Adams is a 1793portrait painting by the AmericanartistJohn Trumbull depicting thelawyer,politician andFounding Father of the United StatesJohn Adams.[1] Trumbull was celebrated for hishistory paintings featuring scenes from theAmerican Revolutionary War.

Version in theNational Portrait Gallery

Adams sat for him while serving as the firstVice President underGeorge Washington. He is shown wearing the fashionablepowdered wig of the era. Versions of the painting are now inNational Portrait Gallery (United States) of theSmithsonian, theWhite House andHarvard University. Trumbull later drew on this likeness of Adams for his incorporation into his large crowd scene forDeclaration of Independence.[2][3][4]
