Washington is astate in thePacific Northwest region of theUnited States. It is often referred to asWashington state to distinguish it fromthe national capital, both named afterGeorge Washington, aU.S. Founding Father and the firstU.S. president. Washington borders thePacific Ocean to the west,Oregon to the south, andIdaho to the east and sharesan international border with theCanadian province ofBritish Columbia to the north.Olympia is thestate capital, and the most populous city isSeattle.

Washington is the18th-largest state, with an area of 71,362 square miles (184,830 km2), and the13th-most populous state, with a population of over 8 million. The majority of Washington's residents live in theSeattle metropolitan area, the center of transportation, business, and industry onPuget Sound, an inlet of the Pacific Ocean consisting of numerous islands, deepfjords and bays carved out by glaciers. The remainder of the state consists of deeptemperate rainforests in the west;mountain ranges in the west, center, northeast, and far southeast, and a semi-arid basin region in the east, center, and south, given over to intensive agriculture. Washington is the second most populous state on theWest Coast and in the Western United States, afterCalifornia.Mount Rainier, an activestratovolcano, is the state's highest elevation at 14,400 feet (4,389 meters), and is the mosttopographically prominent mountain in thecontiguous U.S.

Washington is a leadinglumber producer, the largest producer of apples, hops, pears, blueberries, spearmint oil, and sweet cherries in the U.S., and ranks high in the production of apricots, asparagus, dry edible peas, grapes, lentils, peppermint oil, and potatoes. Livestock, livestock products, and commercial fishing—particularly ofsalmon,halibut, andbottomfish—are also significant contributors to the state's economy. Washington ranks third inwine production. Manufacturing industries in Washington include aircraft, missiles, shipbuilding, and other transportation equipment, food processing, metals, and metal products, chemicals, and machinery. Location of the convention center within Downtown Seattle

TheSeattle Convention Center (SCC), formerly theWashington State Convention Center (WSCC), is aconvention center inSeattle,Washington,United States. It consists of two buildings inDowntown Seattle with exhibition halls and meeting rooms: Arch alongPike Street and Summit on the north side ofPine Street. The former straddlesInterstate 5 and connects withFreeway Park. The convention center was planned in the late 1970s and funded through $90 million inbonds issued by thestate legislature.

Construction began in September 1985 after delays in securing private funding; the complex opened on June 18, 1988. A major expansion began in 1999 and was completed in 2001, doubling the amount of exhibition space. A hotel and office tower were added, along with connections to the existing facility via askybridge over Pike Street. At the site of theConvention Place transit station, located a block north of the original convention center, a second major expansion began in 2018 and opened in January 2023. The entire facility was renamed to the Seattle Convention Center in 2022, with the first two buildings named "Arch" and the second expansion named "Summit". (Full article...)
