Television (TV) is atelecommunication medium for transmitting moving images and sound. Additionally, the term can refer to a physical television set rather than the medium oftransmission. Television is amass medium for advertising, entertainment, news, and sports. The medium is capable of more than "radio broadcasting", which refers to an audio signal sent toradio receivers.

Television became available in crude experimental forms in the 1920s, but only after several years of further development was the new technology marketed to consumers. After World War II, an improved form of black-and-white television broadcasting became popular in the United Kingdom and the United States, and television sets became commonplace in homes, businesses, and institutions. During the 1950s, television was the primary medium for influencingpublic opinion. In the mid-1960s, color broadcasting was introduced in the U.S. and most other developed countries.

In 2013, 79% of the world's households owned a television set. The replacement of earliercathode-ray tube (CRT) screen displays with compact, energy-efficient, flat-panel alternative technologies such asLCDs (bothfluorescent-backlit andLED),OLED displays, andplasma displays was a hardware revolution that began with computer monitors in the late 1990s. Most television sets sold in the 2000s were stillCRT, and it was only in early 2010s that flat-screen TVs decisively overtook CRT. Major manufacturers announced the discontinuation of CRT,Digital Light Processing (DLP), plasma, and even fluorescent-backlit LCDs by the mid-2010s. LEDs are being gradually replaced by OLEDs. Also, major manufacturers have started increasingly producing smart TVs in the mid-2010s. First Sergeant Martin Christopher Keamy is arecurring fictional character played byKevin Durand in thefourth season of the AmericanABC television seriesLost. Keamy is introduced in the fifth episode of the fourth season as a crew member aboard the freighter called theKahana that is offshore the island where most ofLost takes place. In the second half of the season, Keamy served as a primary antagonist. He is the leader of a mercenary team hired by billionaireCharles Widmore (played byAlan Dale) that is sent to the island on a mission to capture Widmore's enemyBen Linus (Michael Emerson) from his home, then torch the island. UnlikeLost's ensemble of characters who, according to the writers, each have good and bad intentions, the writers have said that Keamy is evil and knows it. Durand was contacted for the role after one ofLost'sshow runners saw him in the 2007 film3:10 to Yuma. Like otherLost actors, Durand was not informed of his character's arc when he won the role. Throughout Durand's nine-episode stint as aguest star, little was revealed regarding his life prior to his arrival on the island and Durand cited this as a reason why the audience "loved to hate" his villainous character. Critics praised the writers for breakingLost tradition and creating a seemingly heartless character, while Durand's performance and appearance were also reviewed positively.

Pierino Ronald "Perry"Como (/ˈkoʊmoʊ/; May 18, 1912 – May 12, 2001) was an American singer, actor, and television personality. During a career spanning more than half a century, he recorded exclusively forRCA Victor for 44 years, from 1943 until 1987.

"Mr. C.", as Como was nicknamed, reportedly sold over 100 million records worldwide and pioneered a weekly musical variety television show. His weekly television shows and seasonal specials were broadcast throughout the world. Como recorded primarily vocal pop and was renowned for recordings in the intimate, easy-listening genre pioneered by multimedia starBing Crosby. TheGolden Martín Fierro Award is presented annually by theAsociación de Periodistas de la Televisión y Radiofonía Argentina (APTRA) (Spanish:Association of journalists of Argentine television and radio). It is given to honor an Argentine individual with an outstanding career in the media of Argentina or a recent production of outstanding quality. APTRA described the standard as "the best among the best". It was first awarded in 1992 at theMartín Fierro Awards ceremony for works from 1991. It is a special award, unrelated to the regular ones, which are distributed in categories. A second award, the Platinum Martín Fierro Award, is selected by public poll among the previous recipients of the Golden award. This second award was created in 2009 for works from 2008, but there was no Platinum award for the 2013 ceremony. The awards for thecable television were split to their own ceremony, with its own Golden Martín Fierro in 2015.

Stranger Things is an Americanstreaming television series created forNetflix bythe Duffer Brothers, which features anensemble cast. It is set in the fictional rural town of Hawkins,Indiana, in the 1980s. The Hawkins National Laboratory ostensibly performs scientific research for theUnited States Department of Energy, but secretly conducts experiments on theparanormal andsupernatural, frequently employing human subjects. Inadvertently, the laboratory created a portal to analternate dimension called "the Upside Down". The influence of the Upside Down starts to affect the unknowing residents of Hawkins in calamitous ways. All episodes of thefirst season were released on Netflix on July 15, 2016, and thesecond season was released in its entirety on October 27, 2017. Athird season was released on July 4, 2019, with thefourth season being released in two volumes on May 27 and July 1, 2022, respectively. The fifth season, released in 3 volumes, premiered in late 2025 on November 26 (Volume 1), December 25 (Volume 2), and the final episode on December 31 (Volume 3).

The series has received critical acclaim and numerous accolades for its writing, acting, directing, production values, visual effects, and soundtrack.Stranger Things has been nominated for many awards, including 57Primetime Emmy Awards (12 wins), fourGolden Globe Awards, fourGrammy Awards, fourCritics' Choice Television Awards (one win), 13Saturn Awards (four wins), twoProducers Guild of America Awards (one win), threeWriters Guild of America Awards, and twoPeabody Awards (one win). The Adventures of Mini-Goddess, also known asAh! My Goddess: Being Small Is Convenient, is a Japaneseanimated TV series that aired 48 episodes between 1998 and 1999. It was directed by Hiroko Kazui and Yasuhiro Matsumura and was produced byOriental Light and Magic. The series premiered onWOWOW as a part of the omnibus showAnime Complex. It was formerly distributed inNorth America byGeneon Entertainment. It is part of theOh My Goddess! series, which follows the adventures of three goddesses (Belldandy,Urd, andSkuld) and their rat companion Gan-chan.

In Japan, the series aired on WOWOW between April 6, 1998 and March 29, 1999. The season was then released on DVD and VHS byPony Canyon. Six VHS tapes were released between December 18, 1998, and October 20, 1999, and six DVDs were released between May 19, 1999, and October 20, 1999. A DVD box set was released in Japan on February 20, 2008. ForRegion 1, the season was licensed to Pioneer Entertainment (now Geneon Entertainment), and was released between February 12, 2002, and August 13, 2002, in four DVD compilations, each of which contained twelve episodes. Kaze no Stigma (風の聖痕; lit.Stigma of the Wind) is ananime series directed by Jun'ichi Sakata and produced byGonzo. They are based on thelight novel seriesKaze no Stigma by Takahiro Yamato, and adapt the source material over twenty-four episodes. The plot of the episodes is based on the return ofKazuma Kannagi to Japan after being exiled by his clan, and his subsequent interactions with his clan.

The series aired from April 2007 to September 2007 in Japan on thirteen networks, withChiba TV,Fukui TV,Tokyo MX TV,TV Hokkaido, andTV Saitama airing the episodes first on 11 April 2007. TheArthur Ashe Courage Award (sometimes called theArthur Ashe Award for Courage orArthur Ashe Courage and Humanitarian Award) is presented as part of theESPY Awards. It is named for the American tennis playerArthur Ashe. Although it is a sport-oriented award, it is not limited to sports-related people or actions, as it is presented annually to individuals whose contributions "transcend sports". According toESPN, the organization responsible for giving out the award, "recipients reflect the spirit of Arthur Ashe, possessing strength in the face of adversity, courage in the face of peril and the willingness to stand up for their beliefs no matter what the cost". The award was presented as part of the ESPY Awards ceremony at theMicrosoft Theater in Los Angeles from 2008 to 2019. The 2020 ESPYs ceremony was held virtually due to theCOVID-19 pandemic, with the Ashe Award being one of the few awards presented, and the 2021 ceremony was held in New York City.

The inaugural award, made at the 1993 ESPY Awards, was presented to the Americancollege basketball player, coach, and broadcasterJim Valvano. In 1993, ESPN partnered with Valvano to create theV Foundation which presents the annualJimmy V Award to "a deserving member of the sporting world who has overcome great obstacles through perseverance and determination." Suffering from cancer, Valvano gave the inaugural Arthur Ashe Courage Award acceptance speech which "brought a howling, teary-eyedMadison Square Garden to its feet". Valvano died two months after receiving the award. Although the award is usually given to individuals, it has been presented to multiple recipients on seven occasions: former athletes onUnited Airlines Flight 93 (2002),Pat and Kevin Tillman (2003),Emmanuel Ofosu Yeboah andJim MacLaren (2005), Roia Ahmad andShamila Kohestani (2006),Trevor Ringland andDavid Cullen (2007), andTommie Smith,John Carlos (2008), and survivors of theUSA Gymnastics sex abuse scandal (2018). HolbyBlue is a Britishpolice procedural drama which was created byTony Jordan. The show is set in the fictional city ofHolby, and focuses on the daily lives of police officers working at Holby South police station. The show'sensemble cast for series one consisted ofJimmy Akingbola,Joe Jacobs,David Sterne,Cal MacAninch,James Hillier,Kacey Ainsworth,Richard Harrington,Zöe Lucker,Chloe Howman,Kieran O'Brien,Tim Pigott-Smith andElaine Glover. Pigott-Smith departed the drama in the final episode of the first series at the conclusion of his character's storyline. ActorsOliver Milburn andJames Thornton joined the drama for series two.

The creation ofHolbyBlue was announced on 27 April 2006 by theBBC. It was revealed that the show would have links to British medical dramaHolby City. Tony Jordan was recruited to write scripts for the show and work out "how storylines between the police station and the hospital could be intertwined." The first series began filming at the end of January 2007, commenced airing on 8 May 2007 at 8 pm, one week later than scheduled for unknown reasons, and concluded on 26 June 2007. On 21 June 2007, it was announced thatHolbyBlue would air a second series in 2008, this time for an extended run of twelve episodes. Miami Vice is an Americanpolice procedural television series that aired onNBC for five seasons from 1984 and 1989, with an unaired episode airing onUSA Network in 1990. StarringPhilip Michael Thomas,Don Johnson,Edward James Olmos,Olivia Brown,Saundra Santiago,John Diehl andMichael Talbott, it focuses on the lives of two undercoverMetro-Dade police officers,Ricardo Tubbs (Thomas) andJames "Sonny" Crockett (Johnson). The series was created byAnthony Yerkovich, withMichael Mann andDick Wolf serving as executive producers.

Since its debut,Miami Vice has received several award nominations, including twenty at theEmmy Awards, seven at theGolden Globe Awards, twoPeople's Choice Awards and twoGrammy Awards. Although lead actor Philip Michael Thomas coined the phrase "EGOT" for his ambitions to win Emmy, Grammy,Oscar andTony Awards, only Johnson and Olmos won acting awards for their work on the series, while composerJan Hammer earned two Grammy awards for his composition for the show's opening credits, "Miami Vice Theme". John Ford (1894–1973) was an Americanfilm director whose career spanned from 1913 to 1971. During this time, he directed more than 130 films; however, nearly all of his silent films are lost. Born inMaine, Ford entered the filmmaking industry shortly after graduating from high school with the help of his older brother,Francis Ford, who had established himself as a leading man and director forUniversal Studios. After working as an actor,assistant director,stuntman, and prop man – often for his brother – Universal gave Ford the opportunity to direct in 1917. Initially working inshort films, he quickly moved into features, largely withHarry Carey as his star.

In 1920, Ford left Universal and began working for theFox Film Corporation. During the next ten years he directed more than 30 films, including the westernsThe Iron Horse (1924) and3 Bad Men (1926), both starringGeorge O'Brien, the war dramaFour Sons and the Irishromantic dramaHangman's House (both 1928 and both starringVictor McLaglen). In the same year as these last two films, Ford directed his firstall-talking film, the shortNapoleon's Barber. The following year, he directed his first all-talking feature,The Black Watch.
