Israel, officially theState of Israel, is a country in theSouthern Levant region ofWest Asia. It isbordered byLebanon to the north,Syria to the northeast,Jordan to the east, andEgypt to the southwest. Israeloccupies the West Bank and theGaza Strip of thePalestinian territories, as well as the SyrianGolan Heights. Israel'swestern coast lies on theMediterranean Sea, its southern tip reaching theRed Sea, and the east includes theEarth's lowest point near theDead Sea.Jerusalem is the government seat andproclaimed capital, whileTel Aviv is Israel'slargest urban area andeconomic centre.

TheLand of Israel, also calledPalestine or theHoly Land, was home to the ancientCanaanites and later the kingdoms ofIsrael and Judah. Located nearcontinental crossroads, itsdemographics shifted under various empires. 19th-centuryEuropean antisemitism fuelled theZionist movement for aJewish homeland, which gainedBritish support with the 1917Balfour Declaration. AfterWorld War I, Britain occupied the region and establishedMandatory Palestine. Amir Shmuel Blumenfeld (/əˈmɪərʃmuˈɛlˈblmənfɛld/;Hebrew:אמיר שמואל בלומנפלד; born January 18, 1983) is anIsraeli-American comedian, actor, writer,television host, and member of the Americancomedy duo,Jake and Amir. Born in Israel, he moved to Los Angeles when he was two, and was hired by the New York City-basedCollegeHumor in 2005. As well as contributing to its books and articles, he has written and starred in original videos for the comedy website—appearing in series such asHardly Working andVery Mary-Kate—and was a cast member on its short-livedMTV programThe CollegeHumor Show.

Amir first came to national prominence in 2004 when he was a semi-finalist during Yahoo's inaugural national IM Live contest, losing to the eventual champions. Now, he is best known for appearing in theweb seriesJake and Amir withJake Hurwitz, in which he plays an annoying and exaggerated version of himself. Originally made by Hurwitz and Blumenfeld in their spare time, the series was then produced by CollegeHumor. Mamilla (Hebrew:ממילא) is a neighbourhood of Jerusalem that was established in the late 19th century outside theOld City, west of theJaffa Gate. Until 1948 it was a mixed Jewish–Arab business district. Between1948 and1967, it was located along thearmistice line between the Israeli andJordanian-held sector of the city, and many buildings were destroyed by Jordanian shelling. The Israeli government approved anurban renewal project for Mamilla, apportioning land for residential and commercial zones, including hotels and office space. TheMamilla Mall opened in 2007.
