Pierre Barthès (born 13 September 1941) is a retired French tennis player.

Career

Born inBéziers, Barthès was one of theHandsome Eight, a group of players signed byLamar Hunt in 1968 for the newly formed professionalWorld Championship Tennis (WCT) group.[4] In 1974, he reached a career-high ATP singles ranking of world No. 54, though this is not a true indication, as he was one of the top 20 players in 1971 before the creation of the ATP ranking system, making the year-endMasters the same year. He was also aUS Open doubles champion in 1970, partneringNikola Pilić.

Barthès won the 1963Pau Championships defeatingPierre Darmon in the final.

Barthès won the Paris All Saints indoor event the Coupe Albert Canet in 1963 defeating Darmon in the final.

Barthès won theEgyptian International Championships in Cairo in 1964 on clay defeatingMartin Mulligan,Ismail El Shafei, andIstvan Gulyas in the final.

Barthès won theAltamira International Invitation in Caracas, Venezuela in 1965 on clay defeatingPancho Guzmán,Ron Holmberg,Ramanathan Krishnan,Frank Froehling III, andManuel Santana in the final.

Barthès turned professional for the 1967 season. He won theMarseille Pro Championships on indoor wood that year defeatingMike Davies,Ken Rosewall, andFred Stolle in the final. He won the Grenoble, France indoor hardcourt event in 1970 defeatingCliff Drysdale,Rod Laver, andAndres Gimeno in the final.
