Papionini is atribe ofOld World monkeys that includes several largemonkey species, which include themacaques ofNorth Africa andAsia, as well as thebaboons,geladas,mangabeys,kipunji,drills, andmandrills, which are essentially fromsub-Saharan Africa (although some baboons also occur in southernArabia).[1] It is typically divided into twosubtribes: Macacina for thegenusMacaca and itsextinct relatives and the Papionina for all other genera.[2][3]
Papioninfossils are extensivelyknown from thePliocene andPleistocene ofEast Africa.[4]
