Oregon Geographic Names is a compilation of the origin and meaning ofplace names in theU.S. state ofOregon, published by theOregon Historical Society. The book was originally published in 1928. It was compiled and edited byLewis A. McArthur. As of 2011^[update], the book is in its seventh edition, which was compiled and edited by Lewis L. McArthur^[a] (who died in 2018).

In its introduction, it identifies six periods in thehistory of the state which have contributed to the establishment of local names:

• The thousands of years ofNative American life;
• The period ofSpanish,British,French andearly American exploration, with arrivals by sea and overland, exemplified by the activities of theHudson's Bay Company and theLewis and Clark Expedition;
• Thepioneer period, up to and particularly including the days of theOregon Trail;
• The period ofIndian Wars and mining claims inspired by theCalifornia Gold Rush and later facilitated by theMining Act of 1872;
• The period ofhomesteading between 1875 and 1925, which affected nine million acres (36,000 km²); and
• The modern period ofneologisms

The seventh edition contains 6,252 entries, with references to another 2,679 names scattered throughout the text.^[1] Entries are listed in alphabetical order, beginning withA B Crossing, a railroad station inCoos County,^[2] and ending withZwagg Island, an island nearBrookings, Oregon.^[3]

The first three editions were edited by Lewis A. McArthur and published byBinford & Mort;^[4] Lewis L. McArthur took over from his father as of the fourth (1974) edition,^[5] which was the first to be published by theOregon Historical Society Press.^[6]

The seventh edition also includes aCD-ROM with a complete biographic and geographic index as well as various maps of Oregon locations.^[7]

Lewis L. McArthur died in 2018.^[8] His daughter, Mary McArthur, reportedly took over editorship for the book's upcoming 8th edition.^[9][10][11]

According to Champ Vaughan, past president of theOregon Geographic Names Board, no other state has a book quite like it.^[11]
