Nilmani Phookan (10 September 1933 – 19 January 2023)[1] was an Indian poet in theAssamese language and an academic. His work, replete withsymbolism, is inspired byFrench symbolism and is representative of the genre inAssamese poetry. His notable works includeSurya Henu Nami Ahe Ei Nodiyedi,Gulapi Jamur Lagna, andKobita.[2][3]

Phookan has won the 56thJnanpith Award, India's highest literary award, for the year 2020.[4] He was also awarded the 1981Sahitya Akademi Award inAssamese for his poetry collection,Kavita (Kobita).[5] He was awarded thePadma Shri byGovernment of India in 1990,[6] and received theSahitya Akademi Fellowship, the highest literary honor in India, given bySahitya Akademi, India's National Academy of Letters in 2002.[7]

Early life and education

Phookan was born inDergaon inGolaghat district,Assam. He received his Master's degree inHistory fromGauhati University in 1961. Although he had started writing poetry in the early 1950s.[8]

Career

Phookan started his career as a lecturer atArya Vidyapeeth College inGuwahati in 1964, where he worked until his retirement in 1992.[8] He has also translated Japanese and European poetry into Assamese.

Phookan won the 56thJnanpith Award, India's highest literary award, for the year 2020.[9][10] He was also awarded theAssam Valley Literary Award in 1997,[11] and in 2002 he received theSahitya Akademi Fellowship, the highest literary honor in India, given bySahitya Akademi, India's National Academy of Letters, reserved for "the immortals of literature".[12] In 2019, he was awarded aD.Lit. byDibrugarh University.[13]
