Niels McDonald (born 26 January 2008) is a Germantennis player. He has a career-highATP singles ranking of No. 1,036 achieved on 4 August 2025 and a doubles ranking of No. 874 reached on 9 February 2026.
McDonald won theboys' singles title at the2025 French Open.[1]
McDonald was born inCardiff, Wales to a German mother and a Scottish father.[2][3] He lived nearLondon until the age of four, when his family moved toSchwerin, Germany.[4][5]
McDonald had significant results onITF junior circuit. In May 2024, he won both the singles and doubles titles at the J200 tournament inHanover.[6][7] The following month, he and compatriotDiego Dedura-Palomero won the doubles title at the J300 tournament inBamberg.[8] The German also won the singles title and reached the semifinals in doubles at the J200 Babolat Cup inPlzeň.[9]
In January 2025, McDonald and compatriotJamie Mackenzie reached theboys' doubles quarterfinals of theAustralian Open.[10] The following month, at the J200 Bavarian Junior Winter Championships inOberhaching, he reached the quarterfinals in singles and won the doubles title with compatriotMax Schönhaus.[11] That March, he and Mackenzie won back-to-back J200 doubles titles inValencia andBenicarló, Spain.[12]
In June of that season, McDonald won theboys' singles title at theFrench Open, upsetting top seedAndrés Santamarta Roig in the process and defeating Schönhaus in the final.[13][14] He was the first German boy to win aFrench Open singles title sinceDaniel Elsner in1997, and the first to lift a major jr. title in singles sinceAlexander Zverev in2014.[15][16] In September 2025, he defeatedYannick Alexandrescou in the singles final of the U18 European Junior Championships.[17]
He reached anITF junior combined ranking of world No. 4 on 9 June 2025.[18]
In July 2024, McDonald made hisATP Challenger Tour debut with a wildcard into thedoubles main draw of theBrawo Open, partnering compatriotNicola Kuhn; they reached the quarterfinals.[19][20]
McDonald has dual German and British citizenship.
He currently trains atGood to Great Tennis Academy and plays for Oldenburger TeV in the2. Tennis-Bundesliga [de].[21]
