Newspaper extra

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Special issue of a newspaper
Extra edition of theHonolulu Star-Bulletin following theattack on Pearl Harbor

Anewspaper extra, extra edition, special edition, or simplyextra is a special issue of anewspaper published outside the regular schedule to report major or breakingnews that arrived too late for the standard edition, such as the outbreak of war, the assassination of a public figure, or key developments in a high-profile trial.[1]: 261

It evolved from the earlierbroadside, a single-sided sheet intended to be posted in public places.[2]

Beginning in the mid-19th century United States, street vendors would call out, "Extra! Extra! Read all about it!" when selling extras.[3] This phrase later became acatchphrase often used to introduce dramatic events in films.[4]

With the rise ofradio, extras became largely obsolete in the early 1930s in areas with good radio coverage, replaced bybreaking news bulletins.[1]: 36  However, extras have occasionally appeared into the 21st century. For example, several North American newspapers published an extra on the afternoon of September 11, 2001, to report theterrorist attacks, even if they had not issued extras for years prior.[5][6]
