TheNew South Wales Women cricket team, also known as theNew South Wales Breakers, is the women's representativecricket team for theAustralian State ofNew South Wales. They play most of their home games atNorth Sydney Oval and they also useHurstville Oval,Sydney andBlacktown ISP Oval, Sydney. They compete in theWomen's National Cricket League (WNCL), the premier50-over women's cricket tournament in Australia, and are by far its most successful team, having won 20 titles. They previously played in the now-defunctAustralian Women's Twenty20 Cup andAustralian Women's Cricket Championships.
New South Wales's first recorded match was againstVictoria on 17 March 1891, however, the result is unknown.[1] Their first match with a known result was also against Victoria, with New South Wales winning a one-day, two innings match by 53 runs on 21 April 1930.[2]
New South Wales played alongsideQueensland and Victoria in the inaugural season of theAustralian Women's Cricket Championships in 1930–31.[3] They continued to play in the Championships until its final season in 1995–96.[4][5] They won the title 13 times, making them the second most successful team after Victoria.[6]
New South Wales joined the newly-establishedWNCL in1996–97.[7] They are by far its most successful team, having won 20 titles, their most recent being the2018–19 competition.[8] New South Wales also won twoTwenty20 Cups in2012–13 and2014–15.[9][10]
New South Wales have used a number of grounds over the years. Their first recorded match againstVictoria in 1891 was played at theSydney Cricket Ground, which they have continued to use intermittently. Historically they have played the vast majority of their home matches at various grounds inSydney as well as intermittent matches inNewcastle.[11][12][13][1]
Since 2012, New South Wales have played most of their home matches atBlacktown ISP Oval as well as occasional matches atNorth Sydney Oval andHurstville Oval. They played their two2020–21 WNCL home games at North Sydney Oval. In the2021–22 WNCL, they played three matches at North Sydney Oval and two at Hurstville Oval. In the2022–23 WNCL, they continued to use North Sydney Oval, as well as playing their first ever WNCL matches atWade Park,Orange.[12][13]
