NGC 290 is anopen cluster of stars in the southernconstellation ofTucana. This cluster was discovered September 5, 1826, by Scottish astronomerJames Dunlop.[7] It lies some 200,000light years away from theSun in theSmall Magellanic Cloud galaxy.[8][2] The cluster is an estimated 30[5]–63[4] million years old and is around 65 light years across.[2][9]
