Metro Trains Sydney Pty. Limited (MTS) is the operator of theSydney Metro North West & Bankstown Line. It is a joint venture between Hong Kong–basedMTR Corporation,John Holland Group andUGL Rail formed in September 2014. It operates the network with a fleet of 45Alstom Metropolis trains under a 15-year contract.[2][3]

The three constituent companies are also partners in theMetro Trains Melbourne joint venture, which has operated theMelbourne suburban network since 2009.[4]

History

In June 2014,Northwest Rapid Transit (NRT), a consortium of Hong Kong–basedMTR Corporation,John Holland,CPB Contractors,UGL Rail andPlenary Group, was selected byTransport for NSW to build stations, procure trains and operate services on theSydney Metro Northwest in a $3.7 billionpublic–private partnership.[5][6][7] The contract was formally awarded by theNew South Wales Government in September 2014.[8] During the construction,John Holland andCPB Contractors built new stations atTallawong,Rouse Hill,Kellyville,Bella Vista,Norwest,Hills Showground,Castle Hill andCherrybrook.[9]

As part of the consortium, MTR Corporation, John Holland and UGL Rail formed the Metro Trains Sydney joint venture in September 2014 to operate metro services when the line opened.[1] The line opened on 26 May 2019, with MTS operatingMetro North West Line services on the line. The line was extended through the Sydney CBD on 19 August 2024 toSydenham.[10]
