Mersalyl (Mersal) is anorganomercury compound[1] andmercurial diuretic. It is only rarely used as a drug, having been superseded bythiazides andloop diuretics that are less toxic because they do not containmercury. It features a Hg(II) centre. Mersalyl was originally adapted fromcalomel (Hg2Cl2), a diuretic discovered byParacelsus.
