Meiō (明応), also known asMei-ō, was aJapanese era name (年号,nengō; "year name") afterEntoku and beforeBunki. This period spanned the years from July 1492 (533 years ago) (1492-07) through February 1501 (525 years ago) (1501-02).^[1] Reigning emperors wereGo-Tsuchimikado-tennō (後土御門天皇) andGo-Kashiwabara-tennō (後柏原天皇).^[2]

1492Meiō gannen (明応元年): The era name was changed to mark an event or a number of events. The old era ended and a new one commenced inEntoku 4.

1492 (Meiō 1, 8th month): ShōgunYoshimura^[3] led an army against Takayori inŌmi Province. He laid siege toMii-dera. Takayori saved himself by escaping in the slopes of Mount Koka. Then, Shōgun Yoshimura returned toHeian-kyō.^[4]
1492 (Meiō 2, 1st month): ThekampakuIchijō Fuyuyoshi was nameddaijō-daijin.^[4]
1492 (Meiō 2, 2nd month): Shōgun Yoshimura, accompanied byHatakeyama Masanaga, marched againstKawachi Province, with plans to capture and put to death Hatakeyama Toshitoyo, the son ofYoshinari.^[4]
September 12, 1495 (Meiō 4, 24th day of the 8th month): Earthquake atKamakura (35°06′00″N139°30′00″E / 35.100°N 139.500°E /35.100; 139.500), 7.1 on theSurface-wave magnitude scale (M_s ).^[5]
July 9, 1498 (Meiō 7, 20th day of the 6th month): Earthquake in theEnshū-nada Sea (34°24′00″N137°42′00″E / 34.400°N 137.700°E /34.400; 137.700), 6.4 M_s .^[5]
September 20, 1498 (Meiō 7, 2nd day of the 7th month): Earthquake in the Enshū-nada Sea (34°00′00″N138°06′00″E / 34.000°N 138.100°E /34.000; 138.100), 8.3 M_s  ; and also on that same day, another earthquake inNankaidō (33°30′00″N135°12′00″E / 33.500°N 135.200°E /33.500; 135.200), 7.5 M_s .^[5]
