Maryanne StevensRSM (born 1947/1948) is an Americantheologian, academic administrator, andreligious sister who is the president emerita of theCollege of Saint Mary. She was the seventh president from 1996 to 2023.

Life

Stevens was born in 1947 or 1948 inAnchorage, Alaska to a military family.[1][2] Her father was a member of theUnited States Air Force.[1] She is the oldest of eight children.[1] Her family moved toRiverside, California.[1] During her sophomore year of high school, she relocated toOffutt Air Force Base.[1] Stevens graduated fromMercy High School.[3] Following graduation, she joined theSisters of Mercy in 1966.[3] She earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics and sociology fromMisericordia University.[3]

Stevens taught at a small Catholic high school inMissouri.[4] She completed a master's degree in theology fromSaint Louis University.[3] Stevens earned a Ph.D. in religion and education fromBoston College in 1987.[3] Her dissertation was titled,Apocalyptic Literature "The Mother of Justice Education": A Design for the Use of the Book of Revelation in Religious Education.[5]Mary C. Boys, Pierre D. Lambert, and Thomas E. Wangler served on her dissertation committee.[5] Stevens joined the faculty atCreighton University in 1986.[2] By 1996, she was the theology program chair.[6] On June 1, 1996, she became the seventh president of theCollege of Saint Mary.[6] She retired on June 30, 2023, and was named president emerita.[6][7] She was succeeded byHeather A. Smith.[3]
