Mary Carney Brown (August 18, 1935 – November 21, 2021) was an American politician who served as aDemocratic member of theMichigan House of Representatives from 1977 through 1994.[1]
Born in 1935 inMidland,Michigan, Brown earned degrees fromAlbion College andSyracuse University. She was an assistant professor atWestern Michigan University from 1965 until her election.[2]
Elected to the House in 1976, Brown chaired several committees and the Democratic Caucus. She held hearings on issues including pay equity and domestic violence. GovernorJames Blanchard appointed her to a task force set up to eliminate wage disparities between men and women in the state civil service.
Ten years after leaving the House, Brown was twice appointed to theNatural Resources Commission by GovernorJennifer Granholm and served through 2011.[3]
In 2007, Brown was inducted into theMichigan Women's Hall of Fame.[4] She died on November 21, 2021, at the age of 86.[5]
