Mareca is agenus orsubgenus ofducks in the familyAnatidae that includes thewigeons.

The genusMareca was introduced by English naturalistJames Francis Stephens in 1824. Thetype species is theEurasian wigeon.[1][2] The name of the genus is from the Portuguese wordMarreco for a small duck.[3] The species now placed in this genus were formerly placed in the genusAnas. Amolecular phylogentic study comparingmitochondrial DNA sequences published in 2009 found that the genusAnas, as then defined, was notmonophyletic.[4] Based on the published phylogeny, the genusAnas was split into four monophyletic genera with five extant species moved into the resurrected genusMareca.[5]
