Makhmur (Arabic:مخمور,romanizedMaẖmūr,Kurdish:مەخموور,romanizedMexmûr) is a town inNineveh Governorate,[1]Iraq. It is situated strategically approximately 60 km southwest ofErbil as well as 80 km north-east ofKirkuk and 80 km south-east ofMosul.

Background

During the 2014IS crisis, the town was captured by IS militants.[2] A volunteer civilian militia to defend the town was created in response.[3] The town was then reclaimed by theIraqi Army in October 2017.

During the2017 Iraqi–Kurdish conflict, clashes were reported on the outskirts of the town betweenKurdishPeshmerga forces and the Iraqi army, supported by thePopular Mobilization Forces (also known asHashd al-Shaabi), until it was fully recaptured by the latter.[4]

Refugee camp

Situated in the Makhmur District is theMakhmur refugee camp, which was founded in 1998.[5] Around 12,000 Kurdish refugees, who fled theKurdish-Turkish conflict in the 1990s, live in this refugee camp.[6]

In 2022, it was subjected to drone strikes by theTurkish state.[7]
