Lomax, the Hound of Music (stylized inall caps; sometimes shortened toLomax) is a 2008 Americanchildren's television series that uses a combination ofpuppets, live actors, live music and animation to promote musical education towards young children (specifically ages 3 to 7 years).

Inspired byJohn Feierabend's "First Steps in Music" curriculum for music educators,[1] the series was created byChristopher Cerf,Norman Stiles and Louise Gikow, and produced by Sirius Thinking, Ltd., Eyevox, Inc., andConnecticut Public Television.

Lomax premiered on October 6, 2008, and received positive reception from parents and critics.[2]

Premise

[edit]

Lomax, the Hound of Music follows the adventures of Lomax (named after well-known ethnomusicologistAlan Lomax), a good-natured,melody-obsessedpuppethound dog, his fluffy cat sidekick, Delta, and their human companion, Amy. Throughout the series, the three travel across the United States on asteam train called the Melody Hound Express, and explore songs in differentmusic genres andmusic styles.[1]

Production

[edit]

It was initially announced that the series would premiere in 2007, but instead was released in 2008. The series was canceled on December 29, 2008, finishing with just 13 episodes. Following the cancellation, PBS relinquished the rights to the show, with Sirius Thinking assuming the primary ownership. In 2010, certain PBS stations revealed plans to rerun the series for a brief period.[citation needed]
