La Dépêche, formallyLa Dépêche du Midi (French pronunciation:[ladepɛʃdymidi]ⓘ), is a regional daily newspaper published inToulouse inSouthwestern France,[1][2] with seventeen editions for different areas of theMidi-Pyrénées region.[3] The main local editions are for Toulouse,Ariège,Aude,Aveyron,Haute-Garonne,Gers,Lot,Lot-et-Garonne,Hautes-Pyrénées,Tarn, andTarn-et-Garonne.
The newspaper first appeared on 2 October 1870 when it was calledLa Dépêche de Toulouse.[4][5] Publication was prompted by workers at the Sirven print works inToulouse, which established the paper'sleft-leaning political stance.[5] It was atLa Dépêche that theSocialist politicianJean Jaurès wrote his first articles. The paper also published the articles byGeorges Clemenceau. In the big issue of the day, theDreyfus affair, the paper first insistedAlfred Dreyfus had given army secrets to theGerman Empire but then came out in his support.
The paper fell under German control after theNazi occupation of 1940. Like other newspapers that had collaborated during the war,La Dépêche de Toulouse was closed by the postwar government in 1944.[5] It reappeared under its current name in 1947.[5] Like its predecessorLa Dépêche du Midi has a leftist stance.[5]
