LATAM Cargo Chile (formerlyLAN Cargo S.A.) is acargo airline based inSantiago,Chile and the freight subsidiary of theLATAM Airlines Group. It is operating cargo flights withinSouth America, toEurope andNorth America from its hubs atMiami International Airport andArturo Merino Benítez International Airport.[1]

It is a sister company ofLATAM Cargo Brasil andLATAM Cargo Colombia.

History

[edit]

The airline was formed on May 22, 1970, after the cargo and passenger business ofLAN-Chile was separated.

In 1998, it was based on the original cargo divisions ofLAN-Chile,Ladeco, andFast Air Carrier. It also worked closely with the other cargo airlines in the group likeABSA Cargo Airline,Florida West International Airways andMas Air.[1] LAN Cargo was rebranded toLATAM Cargo Chile as part of the merger of its parentLAN Airlines withTAM Linhas Aéreas to formLATAM Airlines Group during 2016.

During the globalCOVID-19 pandemic, the airline flew numerous additional routes on an ad-hoc basis, especially in May 2020 and after.

On 26 May 2020, LATAM filed forChapter 11 bankruptcy in the United States due to economic problems attributed to theimpact of the COVID-19 pandemic on aviation,[2] although they are currently operating and have been negotiating terms.[3] In August, the company announced its second-quarter results, projecting improved operational prospects.[4]
