
The Knobs Region orThe Knobs is located in theUS state ofKentucky. It is a narrow, arc-shaped region consisting of hundreds ofisolated hills. The region wraps around the southern and eastern parts of theBluegrass region in the north central to northeastern part of the state. The western end of the Knobs region begins nearLouisville, Kentucky and continues southeastward throughBullitt,Hardin,Nelson,LaRue,Marion County,Taylor,Boyle,Casey,Lincoln, andGarrard counties before turning northeast and running along thePottsville Escarpment and theAppalachian Plateau. The Knob arc has a length of 230 miles (370 km).[1]
Many of the hills are conical and up to several hundred feet high, some withcapstones that form cliffs. Themonadnocks formed from the eroding margins of thePennyroyal Plateau to the south and theCumberland Plateau to the east. The caprock isMississippianHarrodsburg Limestone and the slopes areBorden Formationshales ofDevonian to Mississippian age.[2][3]
