Keach Hagey is an American journalist and non-fiction writer.[1]

Early life and education

Hagey grew up inEvansville, Indiana.[2] She has a bachelor's and a master's in English literature fromStanford University.[1][3]

Career

Hagey is a media reporter atThe Wall Street Journal where she covers the intersection and interplay between tech companies likeFacebook andGoogle on one side and the media on the other.[1] She has also coveredOpenAI[4] as well as21st Century Fox,Time Warner, andViacom for theJournal.[1]

Hagey was part of a team at theJournal that won theGeorge Polk Award and theGerald Loeb Award.[1]

At theJournal, Hagey covered media owners and executives includingSumner Redstone,Shari Redstone,[5]Rupert Murdoch,[6]Arianna Huffington,Katie Couric,[7]Jeff Zucker,Jeff Bewkes,[8]Shane Smith[9] andNancy Dubuc.[10][3]

Prior to theJournal, she worked atPolitico,[11]CBS News,[12] andThe Village Voice.[1][13] She interned forWayne Barrett atThe Village Voice.[14]

Hagey was interviewed byNPR's Audie Cornish aboutLes Moonves, the former chairman and CEO ofCBS Corporation.[15]

Hagey is the author of a 2018 book aboutSumner Redstone titledThe King of Content: Sumner Redstone's Battle for Viacom, CBS, and Everlasting Control of His Media Empire.[17][18] Hagey discussed the book in interviews withBrian Lamb ofC-SPAN[14] and with Peter Kafka on theRecode Media podcast.[19]

In 2025, Hagey published a biography ofSam Altman titledThe Optimist Sam Altman, OpenAI, and the Race to Invent the Future.[20]James Ball reviewed the book forThe Guardian.[21]Tim Wu reviewed the book inThe New York Times.[22] Hagey spoke withVanity Fair's then editor in chiefRadhika Jones, then executive editor Claire Howorth, and then editor Michael Calderone about Altman's views, ambitions, and career.[23]

Personal life

Hagey is married to Wesley Harris.[16] She met Harris while interning atThe Village Voice.[14] They have three children and live inIrvington, New York.[1][24][25]
