Biography

[edit]

Jukio Kallio was born in Japan[8] to Finnish parents,[9] and he is a musician and game developer[10] based inHelsinki, Finland. His main musical genres consist ofelectronic music, ambient, breakbeat andchiptune.

Career and chronology

[edit]

Kallio started making music in 2011 under the name "Kozilek". His first releases were a short series ofEP's called "DEMO"[11] and "SECOND DEMO".[12] Both of the EP's consisting of fast-pacedchiptune music. He continued to release music on hisBandcamp page as an independent musician. He also remixed songs byKaty Perry,[13] Safari Ducks[14] and Black Sabbath.[15] This was also around the time when Jukio met co-founder ofVlambeer,Jan Willem Nijman on an onlinechat room.

Kallio made his first game soundtrack[16] for a game under development made byVlambeer calledLuftrausers in 2011.[4] The soundtrack consisted of quirky chiptune sounds and it only had one single song, along with a remix[17] by Jukio himself and an extended version of the original.[18] The soundtrack was continued in 2014[19] and development for the game was complete. Kallio would later on create soundtracks for various other titles made by Vlambeer.

In 2013, he made the soundtrack for thegame jam gameWasteland Kings.[20] By 2015 this had become the full gameNuclear Throne, which featured aWestern-inspired soundtrack by Kallio that was later released onvinyl.[21][22]

Kallio continued making music for other small indie games such asThe End (2014),[23]Choice Chamber (2015),[24]Evil Factory (2017)[25] and other various titles.

In 2018, Kallio wrote the music forMinit,[26] anadventure basedRPG made by co-founder of Vlambeer,Jan Willem Nijman.[27] The soundtrack would become one of Jukio's most popular soundtracks (at the time of releasing) and the game was nominated for several awards.[28][29][30][31]

In June 2019, Jukio released his debut album,Kuabee Music.[32] It was the first full-length studio album that he released. The album consisted of bright, vocal-drivenhouse music along with many other styles and genres. The album runs for 46 minutes and has 9 tracks.

Following the release of Kuabee Music, In July 2020 Kallio collaborated with Daniel Hagstrom[7] to create the soundtrack toFall Guys, a game made byMediatonic.[33] The two would continue to write different pieces of music for each season of the game. In the 2020PlayStation Blog the game won Best Independent Game - Platinum[34] and Best Multiplayer Game - Gold.[34] The game received "generally favourable" reviews, according toreview aggregator websiteMetacritic.[35][36] During Season 3 free for all in Spring 2023, Jukio stopped composing soundtracks for the game, leaving Daniel Hagstrom alone.

In September 2020, after the release of theFall Guys soundtrack, Kallio released his second studio albumKuvankaunis.[37] The album consists of acoustic sounds mixed withsynthesizers andambient-ish soundscapes along with realistic vocals. The album runs for 39 minutes and has 13 tracks.

In February 2021, Jukio teamed with Jan Willem Nijman to develop and revise the soundtrack for aracing styled spin-off of the 2018 title,Minit.[38]

According to his website and Daniel Hagstrom's website, Jukio no longer works on theFall Guys soundtrack since Season 9.[39][40]
