Joyce Country (Irish:Dúiche Sheoighe) is a cultural region in countiesGalway andMayo inIreland. It is sometimes calledPartry, after the former tribal territory of thePartraige, which it largely matches.[1] Part of it falls within the ConnachtGaeltacht. Joyce Country lies on the shores ofLough Mask andLough Corrib, and includes thePartry Mountains. It is a rural area that includes small settlements such asClonbur,Cong,Cornamona andToormakeady. It bordersConnemara, to its south and west.
One of the first of the family ("Seoighe" in Gaelic) recorded in Connacht was Thomas Joy, who established a minorHiberno-Norman lordship in northernIar Connacht. His territory was thebarony of Ross, contiguous to Killery Bay and extending from Cong river to the river. The Joyce family became completelyGaelicised, ruled over their followers like theChiefs of anIrish clan, and assimilated into the localGaelic culture.
