John Edward Pence (born June 13, 1989) is an American attorney, businessman and political advisor who worked as a senior political advisor for PresidentDonald Trump. During Trump's 2016 and 2020 presidential campaigns, Pence engaged withLatino voters and advocated for Trump's policies regardingLatin America. He is the son of former CongressmanGreg Pence and nephew of former Vice PresidentMike Pence.
John was born inColumbus, Indiana and is the son ofGreg Pence, aUnited States Representative forIndiana's 6th congressional district, and Denise Pence.[1] He is the nephew of Vice President of the United StatesMike Pence.[2] Pence has three sibling and attendedColumbus North High School.[1][3]Pence graduated with a major in Spanish from theCollege of William & Mary.[4] During his college career, Pence studied abroad at theNational University of La Plata in Argentina, where he observedPresident of VenezuelaHugo Chávez receive an award and attack the United States while students applauded him.[4] Pence later spent time teaching theEnglish language inNicaragua underPresident of NicaraguaDaniel Ortega.[4][5] After these experiences, Pence said that he witnessedsocialism ruiningLatin America.[4]Pence later obtained aJuris Doctor from theIndiana University Maurer School of Law[3] and aMaster of Business Administration fromNew York University Stern School of Business.[6]
In August 2016, Pence began working for theDonald Trump 2016 presidential campaign.[7] During thepresidency of Donald Trump, Pence worked as the deputy executive director ofTrump's 2020 presidential campaign.[2][8] While serving in the position, theRepublican National Committee (RNC) paid $37,000 a month to rent an office inTrump Tower for Pence according toCNBC.[8] CNBC also reported that Pence was paid $12,000 per month by the Trump campaign and an additional $12,000 monthly by the RNC.[8]David Bossie andCorey Lewandowski in their bookLet Trump Be Trump write that Pence was responsible for the "crowd-building process" and sophistication of Trump's campaign.[4] According to Trump stafferOmarosa Manigault Newman, Pence was credited for the chants heard duringTrump rallies, with the former staffer saying that he organized section leaders at events to initiate certain chants.[4]Mother Jones noted that Pence was instrumental for building the support ofconservative Latinos during the 2020 campaign, highlighting his ability to speak Spanish while also noting Pence's background in Argentina and Nicaragua.[4] The Trump campaign referred to Pence as "Juan Pence" due to his many Spanish-language videos on social media according to Mike C. Bender's bookFrankly, We Did Win This Election: The Inside Story of How Trump Lost.[5] During thefirst impeachment of Donald Trump, Pence met withLatinos for Trump to defend and promote the president's campaign.[9] He also was one of the main advocates forregime change against PresidentNicolás Maduro, promoting the Trump administration's involvement in theVenezuelan presidential crisis and its support forJuan Guaidó.[4][10][11] Pence signed theMadrid Charter, a document drafted by theright-wing Spanish partyVox that describes left-wing groups as enemies ofIbero-America involved in a "criminal project" that are "under the umbrella of the Cuban regime".[12][13][14]In September 2021, Pence was namedCEO of ACE Specialties, an American company based inLafayette, Louisiana that markets merchandise and assists with fundraising for conservative political candidates.[6][15] John was an attorney at the law firm of Ice Miller LLP, which is one of Indiana's oldest law firms founded in 1910. On January 6, 2025, he launched Frontline Government Relations with Trump 2024 Senior Advisor Michael Glassner. John is also the founder of the DC-based law firm Pence Law Group.
Pence is a member of theRepublican Party. He has been described as having a "populist appeal" with skillfulpublic speaking abilities by theCarroll Daily Times Herald.[16] TheDaily Herald Times also wrote that Pence described theDemocratic Party as wanting to control Americans lives instead of promoting freedom, with Pence saying thatJohn F. Kennedy would be aRepublican in the present day citing Kennedy's "Ask not what your country can do for you" quote, stating the Democratic Party was "not about doing the selfless work".[16] Pence supportsfree markets,limited government andfederalism as outlined in multiple opinion pieces forFox News.[17]
Pence married Giovanna Coia, the cousin of Trump aideKellyanne Conway, on September 14, 2019, inAtlantic City, New Jersey at theSt. Nicholas of Tolentine Church in a ceremony monitored by local law enforcement and theUnited States Secret Service.[18]
