John Harvey Tolan (/ˈtoʊlæn/; January 15, 1877 – June 30, 1947) was an American lawyer and politician who served six terms as aU.S. Representative fromCalifornia from 1935 to 1947.
Born inSt. Peter, Minnesota, Tolan attended the public schools.He moved toAnaconda, Montana, in 1897.He was graduated from the law department of theUniversity of Kansas at Lawrence in 1902.
He wasadmitted to the bar the same year and commenced the practice of law inAnaconda, Montana and served as attorney ofDeer Lodge County, Montana from 1904 to 1906. He moved toOakland, California, in 1914 and continued the practice of law.
Tolan was elected as aDemocrat to theSeventy-fourth and to the five succeeding Congresses (January 3, 1935 – January 3, 1947).He was not a candidate for renomination in 1946 to theEightieth Congress.
He died inWestwood, California, on June 30, 1947.[1]He was interred atHoly Sepulchre Cemetery,Hayward, California.[2]
